Donald Goines
Donald Goines is an acclaimed author who is famous for his urban fiction novels. Goines
wrote on the subject of crime, drugs, violence, prostitution among other factors that are bound to
affect urban settlements. While writing, Goines developed his urban fiction novels either in
terms of series or as stand-alone novels. For instance, he developed the Kenyatta series that was
comprised of several books over a given time.
Early and Adult Life
Donald Goines was born in 1936 in Michigan (Allen, 2008). He was the middle child of
his parents who operated a laundry shop in the locality. Goines went through a rough childhood,
a factor that made him lie about his age in order to join the Air force. In fact, he was a successful
soldier and participated in the Korean war. However, his service in the Air Force was
discontinued because of his drug use. Goines started using hard drugs such as heroine that
prevented him from executing his tasks well.
Goines joined a life of crime to support his addiction as a result, he became acquainted
with the operations of the criminal world. However, he was arrested and served his time at the
Michael Jackson Penitentiary. While in incarnation, developed his writing skills. At first, he tried
writing under the genre of Westerns (Allen, 2008). However, after coming across the works of
Robert Beck, he decided to write urban fiction. Hence, Robert Beck is a notable influence in the
development of his Goines’s style of writing.
Despite serving time in prison, Goines did not overcome his drug addiction problem.
Therefore, he continued to find means through which to raise money to finance the addiction. As
a result, Goines developed a high rate of output of books. He wrote man books over a short
period of time. He decided to spend his tie writing his books rather than engage in crime in an
