DOE 2
Response to Discussion Post
It is generally seen that many scientists perform OFAT experiments, which vary only
one factor at a time while keeping other variables as fixed. However, in most of the
experiment different variables vary simultaneously, and hence I agree with the above post
that DOE is a better approach of dealing with many different variables. It is true that the DOE
is preferred over OFAT experiments when the objective is to study two or more factors on the
response variable because of the use of fewer resources such as experiment, time material,
etc.
I would like to add further advantages of using DOE over OFAT. Using, DOE, the
interaction between factors can be estimated systematically as OFAT does not allow to study
the interactions between variables (Wahid & Nadir, 2013). DOE leads to a more precise
estimate of each factor. For example, in a full factorial design, a DOE utilizes all the
observations to study the effect of each factor and interaction. On the other hand, OFAT, two
of the observations are used to estimate the effect of each factor, which puts a limitation to
the study.
In the present world, where there is continuous advancement in the development of
products and customers are more demanding, the use of DOE is the answer to these
challenges. OFAT may prove to be inefficient and unreliable which can lead to false optimal
conditions as it often consists largely of trial and error, luck, and intuition.Further, using
OFAT results in the missing best settings required for the experiments. For example, if we
want to study the effect of the sweetness of a coffee, then it would be more appropriate to
consider the event of stirring a cup of coffee and the event of adding sugar to a cup of coffee.
It is because of these events simultaneously affect the sweetness of a coffee. Although, OFAT
is generally favored where the data is cheap and abundant, and the effort required to conduct
