NURSING ADVOCACY 2
Nursing Advocacy
Different challenges are experienced by nurses in the healthcare industry. These
unprecedented changes impact on the delivery of healthcare services. These changes include
uncertainty about the health reforms, mandates to improve the quality of care and patient safety
and advancing technology. Also, nurses experience financial pressures, workforce shortages and
increased patient population. Nevertheless, these contests can also create openings for nurses in
the nursing profession. Examples of prospects include increased employment opportunities, a
greater voice for nurses and enhanced image for the nursing profession. To capitalize on these
prospects, nursing groups and individual nurses need to work together to advocate on behalf of
their coworkers. There are different types of advocacy in nursing including professional
advocacy and peer advocacy. Besides, the definition of advocacy exhibits that empowering,
enhancement of respect, equality, and dignity for others and changes in the systems are critical
factors in advocating in the nursing profession.
The American Nurses Association (ANA) focuses on empowering nurses to realize
greater heights. As a result, the association can promote the self-determination of their
colleagues. ANA strives to amplify the voice of nurses by advocating with the decision-makers.
Besides, the association strives to empower nurses to present their views and grievances to the
policymakers (Camicia et al., 2013). Furthermore, the purpose of ANA is to develop nurses into
strong leaders who can drive change from the grassroots. Since 2009, ANA has been able to
create a connected body of nurses who are capable of influencing policy change from the
national, local and state levels. Lastly, ANA believes that advocating for nurses is essential in
advancing nurses which in turn drives change in the healthcare sector.
