THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FINE ART AND POP ART. 2
The relationship between fine art and pop art.
Although art by its definition is a way of expressing emotion, imagination, and creativity,
there is a notable difference when it comes to fine art and commercial art commonly known as
pop art. Fine art involves photography, paintings, sculptures, printmaking, multi-media, and
sound art while commercial art involves branding, advertising, book illustration, and graphic
design. The difference was vivid up until 1950 when countries experienced a period of political
and economic growth years after World War II. A new culture of music emerged and by the late
1950s countries experienced a cultural revolution. This turbulence climate and the increase in
consumerism led to a generation of new artists thus the emergence of pop art. However, a
number of artists were aware of the past and strived to connect between pop art and fine art. This

graduated with a bachelor's in Fine Arts and traveled to New York where his career started in
advertising and magazine illustration.

and commercial art. His paintings were a unique intersection of fine art materials such as
photography and drawing with highly commercialized materials orbiting around celebrity names
and household brands thus gathering international attention for his products (Warhol 2015).
Andy Warhol Brillo Block's exhibition of 1964 clearly indicated the connection between fine art
