There are many different points in our lives that stand out to us when we look back and
think about when we transitioned from adolescence in to adulthood. These are usually big
moments in our lives such as graduation from high school or college, moving into our own
places, or the start of a serious relationship. In other cultures, there are rituals or celebrations
used to determine these transitions. The transitions I am speaking of are known as rites of
passage which is a ceremony or ritual marking an individual’s transition into adulthood or from
one status to another. I am going to explain some of these transitions and how they differ
between cultural and ethnic groups.
As we begin becoming older we begin to become more independent and self reliant we
also have points in our lives that mark the point where we transition from one status to another.
For example in America when a individual graduates from high school this usually is a rite of
passage into adulthood. Even though we still may not be fully developed yet physically or
mentally at this time in our lives we usually move out of our parents house and start living on our
own and becoming self reliant. We move into our own apartment, start paying bills, begin new
serious romantic relationships, and begin our paths into a lifelong career. So for most Americans
high school graduation is a rite of passage into adulthood.

In some traditional cultures rites of passage are where adolescents gain access to sacred
adult practices, to knowledge, and to sexuality. These rites often include dramatic practices that
mark the individual’s separation from the immediate family usually the mother. These practices
are usually characterized by some form of death and rebirth or some sort of contact with the
spiritual world. Through these shared rituals bonds are formed between the instructors and the
adolescents and there are secrets shared to allow the individual to transition into adulthood.
There are many of these traditions practiced in African societies where the western world hasn’t
had much influence yet, in these African tribe’s rituals and ceremonies are a traditional rite of
passage for young boys into manhood when they are perceived to be ready. Other cultures
practice different rites of passage such as the Jewish bar or bat mitzvah or the catholic
confirmation which mark the advancement in maturity of the adolescents.
There are some traditions that get lost in the mix of cultures and ethnic backgrounds and
some that are never going to get forgotten. Assimilation is where the differences between
cultures begin to disappear and you start to see traditions of different cultures and backgrounds
mix together and some become forgotten. Pluralism is where groups of people or cultures
maintain their identities. This usually occurs in the first or original generation of immigrants that
move into other countries and as more generations get brought up you start to witness
assimilation occur and traditions usually practiced by these ethnicity or cultures begin to fade out
with the mixture of old traditions and new ways of thinking.
There are different styles of attachment that are usually practiced among adults rather
than adolescent s or children. Secure attachment is one of these attachment styles and this
attachment style is where adults have a positive view of relationships and find it easy to become

close with others. These kinds of people do not become stressed or overly concerned with their
romantic relationships. These individuals tend to enjoy sexuality in a committed relationship and
are less likely to have one-night stands. Avoidant style is another style of attachment that is
practiced amongst adults. The people who have this style of attraction usually are unsure about
relationships and when they are in a relationship tend to distance themselves from their partners.
Then you have anxious style of attachment and these people demand closeness and are very
jealous and possessive on their relationships. I feel that the secure style of attachment would be
the most effective in having a long-lasting relationship. These individuals are more caring and
tend to argue less and show more emotional and mental support for their partners.
There are many different types of attraction amongst people and I am going to name a
few of them sexual, emotional, and physical you also have aesthetic, intellectual, and sexual.
Physical attraction is where you are attracted to someone by their physical appearance or parts of
their body and there is a lacking of emotional support. Sexual attraction is where you desire a
person just on the basis of sex and that’s all. Emotional relationships tend to be the most long
lasting when it comes to relationships because of the deeper connection on all levels this is
probably the best type of attraction for relationships.
In conclusion there are many different types of rites of passage amongst cultures,
religions, and traditions. There are different types of attachments secure, avoidant, and anxious
where secure is probably the best when it comes to lasting relationships. There are also different
types of attractions. There is physical, Mental, and emotional where emotional is the best for
serious committed long-lasting relationships. These are the rites of passage and more that we
have among cultures and traditions in our country and around the world.
