Study the extract and answer the question below
In June 1993, the Mississippi River flooded an area the size of England. The flat
area on either side of the river is called the flood plain, an area where the river
would naturally flood and deposit fertile sediment. However, settlement and
economic activities are increasingly located on the flood plain. For many years,
engineers have managed the river to prevent flooding. The river has been
straightened, 200 dams have been built and levées have been made even
higher. The river waters now flow up to 12 metres above the level of the
surrounding land. The cost of these measures is 180 million dollars a year in
maintenance alone.
[a]Using the extract above, identify three methods used to prevent the flooding of the
Mississippi River. 3mks
Photos: Death Toll Reaches 200 in Devastating Japan Floods
Over the weekend, sustained heavy rainfall hit parts of western and central
Japan, causing flash flooding, setting off landslides, submerging floodplains, and
forcing more than 2 million residents to evacuate. Today, Japan’s National Police
Agency announced at least 200 people had died, and dozens were still missing,
in the worst weather-related disaster to hit Japan in more than 30 years. More
than 70,000 rescue workers are at work in hard-hit areas searching for survivors
as the damage to villages, roads, and infrastructure is being assessed. Hundreds
of thousands of homes remain without power or clean water.
(b) Using evidence from the insert above only, suggest four (4) effects of flooding in
