A Proposal for A Comprehensive System of Care to Address Mental Health Needs of
Children
Mental health comprises how a person acts, feels, or thinks when faced with life
situations. Positive mental health is an essential component of general health and children's
learning. However, Krause (2016) indicated that 12% to 22% children need mental health
services, yet most of the children diagnosed do not receive the required treatment. Barriers to
mental health care include financial care, racial issues, cultural and linguistic differences, and the
stigma of getting mental health in mental health facilities. Early and current studies have shown
that children with developmental conditions are at a higher risk of developing mental health
conditions (Krause, 2016). Therefore, this proposal calls for the integration and coordination of
children's mental health needs with local communities to promote children's health development
and create resiliency. Developing early response capacity with screening and surveillance will
provide early intervention before the occurrence and development of severe disorders.
In the implementation of this project, nurses will provide a collaborative voice in
partnership with interprofessional team to promote mental health among children. The role of
nurses in this team will be to coordinate care and ensure that the multidisciplinary team
facilitates program delivery (Hjelle, Skutle, Alvsvåg & Førland, 2018). Nurses are efficient are
fulfilling this role because their training incorporates biological, medical, behavioral, and social
sciences that facilitate interactions and teaching skills. Nurses are also accustomed to working
closely with other members of the healthcare team and execute medical decisions about care.
Another role that nurses will meet is to ensure that there is good team cohesion. The success of
this community program, where an interdisciplinary team is expected to achieve results, relies on
