Disaster Management: A case of Sentinel City
There are serious potential effects of natural disasters, particularly tornados on the public
health, infrastructure, and the environment of Casper Park and Acer Tech Center in Sentinel City.
One of the direct health effects is that of injuries and deaths. Different patterns of injuries will
result in various levels of morbidity and mortality. In these neighborhoods of the city, therefore,
there could be injuries and even deaths resulting from tornados just as it happened in Bangladesh
in 1989 (Fast et al. 2016 np.). Another related health effect is that of psychological torture,
especially for those who witnessed the disaster destroying physical structures and claiming lives.
Such mental issues range from minor emotional distress to clinically diagnosable psychological
pathology.
Besides health effects, tornadoes might have damaged buildings, including many of the
hospital structures in Casper Park and Acer Tech Center. Highway overpasses, billboards, and
signposts may have all been swept off. A related case of a tornado in Colombia left a devastating
impact on the healthcare system. A total of eighteen hospitals suffered a varying degree of
structural damage that led to the evacuation of in-patients from seven of the hospitals to given
emergency attention in distant facilities (Fast et al. 2016 np.). Therefore, physical breakage and
demolition of buildings would be inevitable in these neighborhoods, following the disastrous
tornado.

Such a disaster is also prone to damage the environment by falling trees, powerlines,
electric poles, buildings, and soil erosion. It is generally hazardous to the physical environment.
Emergency Management
In response to emergencies such as earthquakes, fires, and these tornados, members of the
emergency department, including teams and organizations, both private and public, would have to
be activated to contain the situation on the ground. The Red Cross is the most common of the
emergency teams responding to disasters such as this. Red Cross is usually a complete package,
including care providers, medical equipment, evacuation team, and communication staff. All these
members will act during, and after the disaster has subsided. Their primary role is to rescue people
during even as tornadoes continue to rip through the city neighborhoods (Gosselin 87). The
communication team organizes the channeling of rescue equipment and personnel to the site, and
also the evacuation of victims from the affected area. The entire Red Cross will generally ensure
rescue victims and ferry them to safety and places where the injured persons will get medical
attention. With assistance from the government, the emergency response group will get food for
the victims and help them in general recovery even after returning to their homes for cleaning and
repair.
Disaster Preparedness
Tornadoes are inevitable in some areas of the United States, including Sentinel City.
Disaster preparedness strategies should be put in place to keep the city residents on the watch. The
same preparedness is essential. As a community nurse, it is highly crucial to prepare the
community by informing them of the impending danger (Gosselin 88). At least tornadoes portray
signs before occurring. In preparation, therefore, I would inform city residents about the oncoming
