Base on your own understanding, how are you going to differentiate disability from
handicap. Cite an example to justify and or support your idea/opinion/understanding
If I am going to differentiate disability from handicap, disability and handicap do not
mean both are the same thing. Just take note of their differences because this is essential.
"A DISABILITY refers to a reduction of function or the absence of a particular body part
or organ." The best example for disability and handicap is Stevie Wonder, who is blind
would qualify as a person with disability. A disability is usually a lifelong condition such as
cerebral palsy, autism, an intellectual disability or being deaf or blind. Does Stevie
Wonder have handicapped? Stevie Wonder do not prevent him from doing what he loves
even if he is blind. In this sense, Stevie Wonder does not have a handicap.
"A HANDICAP is viewed as a disadvantage resulting from a disability that limits or
prevents fulfillment." Meaning if Stevie Wonder’s disability prevents him from singing or
achieving his dreams to be an entertainer then we can conclude that he might be
handicapped. Another best example is Terrence Parkin swam in the 2000 and 2004
Olympics, winning a Silver Medal for South Africa. If you ask, he has a disability? Yes, he
is deaf. Does he have a handicap? Not as long as they add strobe light signals to the
usual auditory buzzer to start the race. If, however, the committee didn't agree to add the
strobe lights, then Terrence would have been handicapped and unable to participate in
the Olympic Summer Games. Being handicapped can depend on the attitudes and social
construction of the culture.
The bottom line is that, disability is something physical and mental incapacity that
you might question yourself why I am blind and others are not, why I am deaf and the
others are not? There are a lot of celebrities who have disabilities yet they perform, inspire
and entertain people. Whatever disability you have it does not make you any less of a
person. It only makes you less of a person if you keep limiting yourself to do what your
heart wants to do, and that’s make you a handicap.
