COLLEGE OF NURSING
Breast Assessment
Question 1:
A post menopausal woman is worried about pain in the upper quadrant
of her left breast. The nurse’s first course of action is to:
Do a breast examination and report the results to the physician
Rationale:
Doing a breast examination first will be the best option. Most of the time, breast
pain is not a sign of breast cancer or anything serious, especially when it’s the only
symptom. There’s a thing called noncyclic breast pain where pain has nothing to
do with the menstrual cycle. There are number of factors can contribute to
noncyclic breast pain after menopause: Medication, large breasts, trauma, referred
pain, and possibly breast cancer. So, it is important to perform breast examination
and report to the physician the results for proper diagnosis of the problem.
Question 2:
The nurse teaches a female client that the best time in menstrual cycle
to examine breasts is during the
First week after menstruation
Rationale:
Because in this week this is when your breasts are least likely to be swollen or
tender. Examining your breasts at your menstrual period or 1 week before you
menstruation occurs it may make it hard to compare results of one exam with
another. A breast self-examination doesn't cause any discomfort. If your breasts
are tender because your menstrual period is about to begin, you may feel slight
discomfort when you press on your breasts.
Question 3:
A client asks the nurse “Where is cancer usually found in the breast?”.
When responding to the client, the nurse uses a diagram of a left breast
