Public Policy
The public policy entails the actions of the government to respond to societal problems
that have been identified and affect a significant number of people in society. The policies are in
the form of laws and regulations that are for the best interest of the public. Therefore, the
government uses the implemented public policy to meet the needs of the people by allocating
and managing public resources (Bernstein, 2017). The policy-making process involves six steps,
and each of them has significant impacts on the outcome of the policy and the people it affects.
The first step in the policymaking process is agenda-setting. In this phase, the
policymakers have to decide the problems they have to address. Policymakers assess several
types of agendas such as systematic, institutional as well as discretionary and decision agendas.
They do this to identify the problem and proposed solutions, thereby choosing the issue to
prioritize (Bernstein, 2017). The next step is policy formation. It involved presenting arguments
to the proposed solutions by considering other constraints like the budget, and the influence of
political and personal interest on public policy. This stage helps policymakers to focus on a
common interest to benefit the public. Policy legitimation is the next step. It ensures that the
policymakers have carried out legal and authoritative actions to consider the policy as a law.
Therefore, it increases the possibility of the public to accept the policy.
Policy implementation entails putting the policies into action. Therefore, it is critical to
have effective implementation strategies for successful outcomes. Policy evaluation follows, and
it involves determining the effectiveness of the implemented policy in achieving the desired
goals. The final step of the policymaking process is policy maintenance, succession, or
termination (Bernstein, 2017). It is essential to periodically assess the relevance and use of
policy after the implementation and evaluation. This step helps in determining if the
