ACE Star Model of Knowledge Transformation
Name: _____________________
Star Point 1: Discovery (Identify topic and practice issue)
Identify the topic and the nursing practice issue related to this topic. (This MUST involve a
nursing practice issue.)
Topic: Treating Depression in Adult Patients
Nursing practice issue: employing cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as complimentary medication in
depressed patients
Briefly describe your rationale for your topic selection. Include the scope of the issue/problem.
The quality of the outcome of health/nursing practice justifies its effectiveness and efficiency. In
this regard, it is important that the appropriate approach is employed toward achieving the primary
objectives of the nursing practice, those of the care providers, and patient needs. According to Holland
& Rees (2010), nursing practices that are based on evidence concerning the primary goals is
considerably the most appropriate. Similarly, Fain (2008) asserts that evidence-based nursing practice
is an approach of care provision that recognizes and acknowledges the patient’s needs, and guarantee to
meet all the needs. Therefore, there is a need for a medication approach that meet all the needs of a
patient with depression thus, the need for the CBT as a complimentary nursing approach.
Star Point 2: Summary (Evidence to support need for a change)
Describe the practice problem in your own words and formulate your PICOT question.
Medication along cannot meet all the needs of a patient with depression. There is a need for a
nursing approach that meet both physiological and psychological, not to mention emotional, social and
religious, needs of the patient thus, the CBT. The PICOT formulated for this nursing practice issue is:
In adult patients with depression, does the combination of a physiological medication with CBT, as
compared to just the physiological medication alone, address the adverse symptoms of depression and
improve quality of life over a short span of time?
P: Adult patients with depression
I: Combining medication with CBT
C: just medication alone
O: address adverse symptoms of depression and improve quality of life
T: within a short span of time

This source provides insights about how certain chronic diseases pose risks of developing depression
and calling for the need to respond with both medication and therapeutic approaches for the disease and
its possible psychological complications; it supports the combination of medication and CBT.

This source also provides information on how the combination of medication and CBT can help
prevent relapses of depression and its associated mental complications; it supports the combination of
medication and CBT.
Briefly summarize the main findings (in your own words) from the systematic review and the
strength of the evidence.
From the findings of the literature review, it is evident that depression is associated with an array
of chronic diseases as some of the complications or manifestations. In adults, the impact of a disease,
including its adversities tend to cause depression, which then increases its severity of impact depending
on the circumstances in which the patient is. For example, health conditions such as cancer, diabetes,
