OBESITY IS BECOMING AN EPIDEMIC 2
Abstract
Obesity is rapidly becoming a major epidemiological challenge in the American
health care system. Over the past 30 years, the incidents of obesity have increased drastically
resulting in over 60% of the adult population in the united states being overweight (Mazer &
Morton, 2018). By definition, Obesity means that a person has a body mass index (BMI) of
over 30kg/m
2
and 40 kg/m
2
in extreme cases. In the recent past, obesity has become a leading
cause of preventable deaths in America hence proving to be a major health risk. Many
scholars attribute the increased risks of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension,
hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and cancer to a
spike in the rate of obesity in children and adult population. The complexity of obesity as a
health issue makes it difficult to determine the direct costs associated with the problem.
However, conservative estimates place the overall healthcare burden linked to obesity at $150
per annum. More so, the problem of obesity, is prevalent among young people which makes
it difficult to determine it real implication since a majority of them are not exhibiting any
symptoms yet. Therefore, the problem of obesity will only become more severe with time
unless drastic measures are taken to address it. In the current study, the researcher examines
obesity as an epidemic in the American healthcare system.
