U.S. ENERGY MIX AND RENEWABLE ENERGIES/ TECHNOLOGIES 2
U.S. Energy Mix and Renewable Energies/ Technologies
The United States produces and utilizes many types of energy. These energies can be
grouped as primary energy sources and secondary energy sources. Primary energy sources are
comprised of fossil fuels that include petroleum, coal, and natural gas, renewable sources of
energy, and nuclear energy. Electrical power is considered a secondary energy source as it is
produced from the primary sources. Owing to the fact that America is a very developed and
highly industrialized society, its energy consumption levels are very high. A lot of energy is used
in industries, homes, and in the business realm. The major energy consumption sectors in the
United States include the industrial sector, transportation, commercial, residential, and the
electrical power industry (Ritchie & Max, 2019). Throughout the history of United States, energy
consumption starts from the end of the advanced agrarian man to our contemporary era
characterized by increased advancements in technology.
Although our forefathers used wood as the main source of energy, the emergence of coal
changed their experiences until the last half of the 19
th
century. The use of coal as the
predominant source of energy changed especially after the Second World War. This was due to
the rise of safety standards and labor issues, which made the costs of producing coal to increase.
Americans changed from the use of coal as the main source of energy to petroleum especially in
the transport industry. Both trucking fleets and railroads locomotives switched to the use of
diesel and gasoline. The use of petroleum and natural gas increased radically until 1973 when oil
embargos increased. To date, no other source of energy has shown such a dramatic increase as
natural gas and petroleum (Moran et al, 2018). It was until the early 1970 and 1980s that
Americans began to use hydroelectric and nuclear sources of energy, and by the early 2000,
