LEADERSHIP THEORIES 2
Question A
The leadership theories are majorly pegged on characteristics of leaders and in most cases
determine the effectiveness of the type leadership in question. Trait leadership theory addresses
central traits, which determine if a leader would prosper or whether they will fail in the end.
Nonetheless, the traits do not determine entirely how effective the trait leadership theory can be
effected. In this respect, other factors determine leadership potential, such as business
knowledge, honesty and integrity, emotional maturity, cognitive ability, leadership motivation,
the drive for accomplishment, and self-confidence (Derue et al. 2009).
Equally, behavioral leadership theory posits that leaders are not born but made. Further,
the theory proposes that the success for such leadership emanates the ability for such leaders to
learn while depicting definable behavior. On the other hand, trait theories postulate that
successful leadership thrives when inherited traits are advanced in a later stage of their leadership
growth (Derue et al. 2009).
Question B
The contingency theory of leadership is based on the leader’s effectiveness. In this case,
the leader is supposed to identify in which aspects of leadership the leader thrives in based on
various circumstances. Amongst various identified contingency theories, the three are the most
common: House’s Path-Goal theory, Fiedler’s Contingency model, and Hersey and Blanchard’s
situational leadership model (Fuller, 2019).
To begin with, according to Fuller (2019), Fielder’s contingency model seeks to
understand leader’s behavior. The theory advocates for the type of leadership anchored on a set
leadership style. As such, the leader should thrive accordingly based on the leadership style, and
therefore, should not change with every changing situation.
