Session 1 Questions
What does the word “Christian” mean in the university’s name?
The word "Christian" can be defined as , in my own words, a person, group, or
institution that follows and belives in the teachings of Jesus Christ. I feel truly being Chrsitian is a
movement that represents the very essence of being kind, forgiving, flawed, and unselfish.
“Though several people have attempted to define this movement, the most broadly accepted
definition was crafted by British historian David Bebbington. In his book Evangelicalism in
Modern Britain (1989) he noted four distinctives, or characterizations, about evangelicals which
have well- described the movement all along its 400-plus-year history and throughout all the
denominations and global regions where it is found: "conversionism, the belief that lives need to
be changed; activism, the expression of the gospel in effort; biblicism, a particular regard for the
Bible and what may be called crucicentrism, a stress on the sacrifice of Christ on the cross" (
Session 1 Biblical perspective, n.d.). I feel the word Christian in CCU runs deeper than a book
definition. I feel it should be the base of any and every educational career because it teaches
integrity, discipline, rightiousness, and the willingness to help a fellow peer.
How does this meaning impact your view of your education here at CCU?
This is my answer to the second question, and I will include a citation from What CCU is All
About it goes to say “This purpose is accomplished through a highly competent and dedicated faculty, an
integrated academic curriculum, and student life programs designed to deepen understanding,
strengthen faith, shape character, and nurture compassionate response in a need-filled world.“ (
Essence of the University ). The reason I chose this is because not only am I in school to get my degree in
psychology but I am able to gain the knowledge required to strive for greatness in my professional
endeavors while in turn gaining the knowledge and wisdom of the Lord’s word in order to be successful

in my personal/spiritual life. In many instances from my own experiences as a student I’ve seen a
number of my peers stray away from not only the values instilled into them at home, but also the word
of God. In my opinion straying away from these things can cause feelings of loneliness, identity crisis,
and lack of motivation. I feel that this institution’s ability to combine the righteousness of Christianity
and the importance of education in today’s society can allow me and others to remain humbled and
goal oriented while seeking a higher education. College, for a lot of people, can be hard to navigate
when presented with temptations, complications, or weariness. I feel this institution will give me the
tools needed to not have the perfect college experience, but choose the right path when I do run into a
bump in the road on this journey we call life.
