RESISTANCE
Introduction
Resistance to change can be characterized directly towards an object of reference, which
has a negative phenomenon to people in a given institution. The unwanted responses by
employees of an organization are regarded as resistance to change. Some authors have viewed
resistance to change as employees of an organization political means of defending their rights
and interests (Jermier, Knights & Nord, 1994).
Charles Darwin proposed the concept of “survival of the fittest” in business. Survival and
growth are the two major pillars that every organization depends on for survival, and there must
be a great balance between both. Organizations cannot grow in isolation; they have to change to
sustain themselves. Introducing change in an organization is not an easy task as it will encounter
resistance from its early phase (Harsh, 2012).
Why We Need Change
There is an old saying that says, “change is inevitable.” Organizations are continually
interacting with their environment. With the rapid changes in the environment, so does the need
for a change to arise. Change in the environment will also affect the work and performance of the
organization, thus the need for adaptation. Organizational change is the modification of the
organization with an objective of improvement of production in the overall corporate process.
Reason for resistance of change
Incredibly a high percentage of envisioned change in an organization does not reach their
full potential; that is to mean, they do not get to achieve implementation or produced the benefits
foreseen by the promoter. Changes do not fail due to technical reasons or a flaw in the change
itself; instead the sponsors of the change did not anticipate the reaction it would cause as it
