SOCIOLOGY RACE AND ETHNICITY REFLECTION
Sociology Race and Ethnicity Reflection
Sociology race and ethnicity is one of the classes that I have enjoyed the most. It has
helped change my attitude and perception of discriminative people. Before taking the course, I
always thought that discrimination is a result of the biological elements that comprise an
individual and drives them to behave in a given way towards others of a different color.
However, through sociology, race, and ethnicity course, I have come to understand that race is a
social construction and not a biological concept (Omi & Winant, 1998). For one to develop a given
perception about people of another race, they are majorly influenced by the environment around
them, which includes the attitude, behavior, and perception of the people one spends most of
their time with. Having changed my perception, my behavior, as well will change towards people
that are discriminative based on race as it is something they have been influenced by their
environment to learn. They can unlearn it under the right circumstances.
Previously, and based on my perception of the development of race and discrimination
based on it, I tended to be understanding to the discriminative people. I would even be part of
them and not speak up when they are engaging in discriminative talk. Not anymore. My behavior
has changed, and I will speak up for those who are being discriminated based on their race. I will
also not be a party to them as their values on race and mine are different. Such has been informed
on my understanding that race is a social construction and has led to the discrimination of many
(Omi & Winant, 1998). The course on minority helped to stretch my mind as it explored various
effects of it and how it affects people of color. It is surprising to know that people of color as
well as discriminate against others like them. For example, a successful person of color
discriminates on the other and has on the perception that such a person is not hardworking
without realizing that they could be denied opportunities. Understanding such phenomena is
