Question
Answer
Status
Identify the different statuses
you hold in society, both
ascribed and achieved.
The statuses that I hold in society are a United States Army Veteran,
dad, student, husband and employee. I received a raise from my
employer after being on the job for six months and showing great
performance. As an army veteran I have served this country for 8
years protecting the people from those that want to attack the U.S.
As a student, going to school is start towards my associate’s
degree. As for my family, I am the provider and they come first.
Master Status
Identify your master
status in society.
My master status is being a father to my children. I have a total of
seven kids which two are from another other people are they are
my top priority in life. My kids are what made me who I am today
and make sure every day that I wake up I am working for them. As a
parent I have to give them guidance to do the right thing and let
them know how it is in the world today. My only status in this world
will always be to be a great parent.
Social Roles
Describe the roles
associated with the
various statuses identified
above.
Being a student my only goal to achieve is obtaining my degree.
Being a father my kids are ahead of my life because they cannot
take care of their selves like a parent would. Being a husband I have
a relationship with my wife that will never end. We have a support
system that works and how we support one another. As an
employee, I am working to provide for my family so they will not
have to work for nothing. Being an Army Veteran I was greatly
honored to serve this country we call the United States of America.
Role conflict, strain, exit
Discuss a time when you
experienced either role
conflict, role strain, or role
exit.
Being a parent takes a lot of my time. It definitely puts a strain on
you especially when you come home from a long day of work and
have to deal with the family. I found myself getting annoyed and
bothered because all I want to do is rest. I have been on my feet all
day and just want to rest. I love showing love to m y family but
when I have had a long day at work it is stressful. It is pretty obvious
because it shows on me. I have learned to deal with this now by
taking time to myself before I mingle with my family so I don’t upset
anyone if I do not feel like be bothered.
Groups
Identify one primary group
and one secondary group to
which you belong.
The primary group that I belong to is family. My family is my only
closet friends that I have and can trust. My secondary group would
be my employer. I don’t have any special relationships with any one
at work because I only go to work to do a job. As a team we work
together but once the work day is over there is no extracurricular
activities afterwards.
Norms, sanctions, and
The norms for the social groups are very much formal. As a student,

values

sanctions, and values of the
social groups you identified

behavior viewed in these
groups?
employee, Army veteran, father and husband I prefer to abide by
the laws at all cost. If the laws and rules that are set for society are
not followed you will be sanctioned and punished for the things that
are done wrong. In my employment I am sanctioned for the good
work that I put in. I am sanctioned for being a good father to my
kids. I value society very much because it has gotten me very far in
life. The way I was raised and taught about my culture has gotten
me to do well in society and make a difference. Any form a defiant
behavior in my group will only lead to jail, which is never good for
anyone or even death depending on the circumstances.
Sociological
imagination
Discuss how your status,
mass media, roles, and
groups have influenced your
self-identity, values, and
behaviors.
My status a student, father, husband and employee have influenced
my life to the maximum extent. Growing up I have stayed to myself
away from people and never said much. After realizing that being
part of group or society it makes you feels more comfortable about
you and with society. The more I interacted with society the more I
value the world for opening me up to interact with the world.
Society is free to me and nothing but welcoming into the world. I
have now become a people person and speak to anyone that speaks
to me.
Part 2 Reflection
After completing the activity above, answer the following questions in 75 to 150 words each:
1. What is social interaction? What are the elements of social structures? How does this apply to the
activity you just completed?
Social Interaction is the way we act and interact with one another in society. Elements
that make up social structure are institutions, social groups, status and notes. The
reason this activity applies is because it identifies my role in society and explains my
interactions with society. This activity also explains the social group that I am a part of.
This activity specifies my status in society along with the type of group that I have
classified to be associated with.
2. What are the functions of social institutions? How do you see this applied in your life?
The functions of social institutions are reproduction, socialization, sense of purpose,
presentation of social order, and transmission of culture and personality development.
Reproduction is applied to my life because of the patterns it reproduces for a social life.
The patterns are race, learning techniques and goods and services that make up life.
Without have this reproduction life would be very difficult to live. Socialization is how I
was born until the day die I am off this earth and learning the ways of life. A sense of
purpose is what I want to fulfill in my life as a special need to be accomplished.
Presentation of social order in my life is to abide by the laws that are set for society that
brings order and control in the world. Transmission of culture in my life is transmitting
what I was taught into my children and then into their children. Spreading there culture in
everyone they meet in this world.

3. What influence does mass media have? Frame your answer using sociological perspectives.
Mass media has influence on everyone in the world. Mass media has provided us with so
much information or gave us a message in every way possible. Without this mass media
where would we get our news from and stay in the loop with our family and friends? How
will we know if the world is in attack or if someone famous is in the area? The news, TV,
internet, papers has kept the world informed through technology. If someone doesn’t
have TV or internet they can get information out the paper. Mass media has made the
world of technology so much better and enabled us to communicate through any form of
technology.
4. What is social control? How is social control enforced? What are the different sociological
perspectives on deviance?
Social control is the consent and compliance that is required of society to follow. Social
control is enforced with the use of informal sanctions which are considered to be
sarcasm or criticism. Social control is also enforced by formal sanctions which apply to
individuals of large groups. In a large group they can disregard the sanctions of other
social groups. There are different types of sociological perspective such as
functionalism, symbolic interactionism and conflict theory. Functionalism applies to a
crime committed by social interactions. Symbolic interactionism refers to social labeling
from a symbol or face to face interactions. Conflict theory is the inequality of society,
which causes a crime in society.
