History/Background of the Organization
The Atlanta Braves is the oldest professional sports franchise that is still operating in
America today. The Atlanta Braves is a Major League Baseball (MLB) team that was formed in
the early 1970s. The franchise’s history started in 1871 as the Boston Red Stockings as it was
incorporated into the Cincinnati Red Stockings (Atlanta Braves Organization MLB, 2021). After
a while, the Red Stockings were among the National Association of Professional Players and the
founder of the National League (Atlanta Braves Organization MLB, 2021). The team debuted the
MLB in 1876. By 1912, the Boston Red Stockings was renamed the Boston Braves. The team
then moved to Milwaukee in the 1950s and was renamed the Milwaukee Braves and later to
Atlanta in 1966 due to dwindling fan support and was renamed Atlanta Braves (Atlanta Braves
Organization MLB, 2021). The previous franchise names include Boston Red Stockings, Boston
Beaneaters, Boston Doves, Boston Rustlers, Boston Bees, Boston Braves, Milwaukee Braves,
and currently the Atlanta Braves (Baseball Reference, 2021). The Atlanta Braves has made 27
playoff appearances, has 18 pennants, and four world championships (MLB, 2021).
To become the longest operating sports franchise in the United States is not a mean feat.
The company has had a proper organizational structure over these years. An organizational
structure entails a system that outlines the management and direction of several organizational
activities to achieve its mission and goals (Muafi et al., 2019). Moreover, the organizational
structure determines information flow between different company levels (Muafi et al., 2019).
Thus, having an organizational structure allows firms to remain focused and efficient by ensuring
proper functions. This paper provides an overview of Atlanta Braves organizational structure by
analyzing its mission and vision, financial information, stakeholders, policy issues, and career
development.

Governance Structure, Organizational Structure, and Staff
The governance and organizational structure at Atlanta Braves is the divisional or
multidivisional structure. Muafi et al. (2019) state that the divisional or multidivisional structure
is common in large organizations where several business units exist. This is where an
organization structures its leadership based on projects, products, or subsidiaries. Atlanta Braves
is structured in this form as the leaders are structured based on different products and functions
within the organization. The organization’s board is headed by the chief executive officer (CEO),
Mr. Derek Schiller; chairman emeritus Mr. William Baryholomay; chairman of the board, Mr.
Terry McGuirk and vice-chairman Mr. John Schuerholz (The Official Board, 2021). The
company’s chief financial officer (CFO) is Jill Robinson, with other CFOs in the control, control,
real estate, and Finance departments. Other departments include the legal, human resource, legal
affiliates & strategic, Braves development, baseball operations, corporate partnership, facility
operations, marketing, technology services, ticket sales, and guest ops & strategy departments
(The Official Board, 2021). The company’s organizational chart is found in appendix A. With
several lines and products, the company has been structured so that every business unit has its
own manager. The function of CEO Mr. Derek Schiller is to manage the overall operations of the
company. The CFO, Jill Robinson, manages all the companys financial operations, including the
control, real estate, and finance departments, which on their own have their own managers. All
the other leaders in the legal, human resource, legal affiliates & strategic, Braves development,
baseball operations, corporate partnership, facility operations, marketing, technology services,
ticket sales, and guest ops & strategy departments manage operations within these lines to ensure
their smooth operations. Decision-making power in the organization is distributed amongst the
different levels within the company. However, the ultimate decisions such as firings, ticket
prices, investments, and others are left to the board and the CEO.

Mission, Values, and Goals
At Atlanta Braves, the companys mission is to make a difference in the community.
Winning is the main goal, but the company’s mark on the fans’ lives is just as important,
especially the young fans. The more the Atlanta Braves is involved in the community, the more
enriched the fans’ lives and company. The commitment and connection of the Braves to the
neighbors reaches beyond the walls of the Turner Field grounds as it extends to the homes and
hearts of the people that support the team. Thus, the Atlanta Braves work to improve the quality
of life by sharing baseballs love with the community (Atlanta Braves Organization MLB, 2021).
Atlanta Braves values are built on the pillars of live, learn, play, and serve. The fans
come first for the company since they are the ones that lead to organizational success. “The
Atlanta Braves Foundation is the non-profit arm of the Atlanta Braves that actively supports
community organizations and their programs within the metro Atlanta area. Since its inception in
1994, the Atlanta Braves Foundation has supported thousands of metro Atlanta-based
organizations and has contributed more than $7 million in financial and in-kind assistance to the
community. Through the generous support of Braves players, employees, sponsors, and fans, the
Atlanta Braves” (The Atlanta Braves Foundation, n.d.). Through valuing the community and its
fans, the company employees take part in volunteer initiatives. Apart from putting the customer
first, the company is founded on honesty and integrity on the part of the employees and players
contracted to the team. Integrity and honesty ensure that the company provides all valuable
information to the fans and the media. These values have been the traditional foundations that
have driven the company into a global franchise.
The company’s vision is to seek to grow into a global franchise with the help of its
community and employees. The vision is to work with the community towards growing the
baseball game through events, programs, and resources that give the youth an opportunity to be

exposed to the game. To learn the game, grow, and compete at all levels. The Atlanta Braves
Foundation (n.d.) seeks to grow the game through the community. By growing the game and
helping the youth learn and get engaged in the game, Atlanta Brave’s vision is to ensure that it
grows business-wise. The community forms an important part of this growth and thus is involved
in making baseball and softball globally recognized sports.
Financial Information
Atlanta Braves is a for-profit company. Thus, its main aim is to ensure that it makes a
profit after every financial year. According to Forbes (2021), the team is valued at 1.875 billion
USD as of March 2021. This is a high valuation and is amongst the top 20 sports franchises in
the world. The profit margin of Atlanta braves has been growing since 2003, and this means that
the company’s financial status is stable. The organization’s profit comes from different sources.
One of the main sources is ticketing, where the company sells match tickets through its owner
the Liberty Media. According to Forbes (2021), the revenue per fan is 8 USD. Ticket sales in the
organization’s SunTrust Park have led to increased organizational revenue and profits. The first
season’s attendance at the stadium increased by 24% in the previous year as it rose into the top
ten in MLB regarding attendance (Forbes, 2018). This, coupled with a loyal fan base, means that
ticket sales are the organization’s main source of revenue and profits.
Apart from ticket sales, the organization also offers products and services. Some products
include the sale of company merchandise, including team jerseys, baseballs, and others that are
found in the clubhouse. Others include the sale of foods and drinks during games which also
earns the company revenue and profit. The organization has also ventured into other businesses,
such as baseball development through academies where the youth are trained and paid.

Cooperating partnerships with other companies has also ensured that the company has ventured
into different businesses with shares that earn the company revenue.
The company’s main expenditure is on the human resource, where it pays its employees.
Additionally, the company takes part in community projects where it donates money to develop
these projects (Atlanta Braves Foundation, n.d.). This is part of the company’s corporate social
responsibility that makes up its expenditure. The company also spends through paying players
who are contracted at the club. The players are under contract per year. The players are part of
the organization’s employees. The total payroll, including incentives and salary for 2021, is $
174,384,418 (spotrac, 2021). Apart from the players, the organization also pays the coaches who
train the players. The franchise has different coaches, including strength coaches, club doctors,
main coaches, and other field coaches. These coaches are paid by the club also as part of the
employees.
Stakeholders/ Membership
As a sports organization, Atlanta Braves has a lot of stakeholders that are part of the
organization’s functions. One of the primary stakeholders is the fans, whom the organization
cannot exist without. The fans form an important part of the organization as they are the main
income earner through ticket sales and buying the franchise’s merchandise. Another important
stakeholder in the company is the team baseball players. The players are part of the company
employees since they are contracted to work for the organization. The coaches that train the
players are also part of the company as stakeholders. Apart from the players and coaches, the
company has other employees that work under different departments, including ticketing, sales,
and marketing departments. The employees work to ensure that they properly conduct
themselves and uphold the organization’s values in meeting the needs and objectives as required.

The managers and board are also stakeholders at the club. These individuals ensure that the
organization is run smoothly. Some management functions include negotiating player contracts,
hiring coaches, and decision-making regarding different strategies required for the organization
to grow and maintain its financial prowess (The Official Board, 2021).
Shareholders are also part of the shareholders since they partially own the organization.
Atlanta Braves shares are traded on Nasdaq, and one can buy the company shares under the
platform. The company goals are often focused on creating value for the shareholders. The
community is also part of the stakeholders. The community supports the organization in different
ways, including forming a fan base and providing conducive environments for the players and
coaches. Finally, Major League Baseball (MLB) is an important stakeholder. MLB formulates
rules and regulations, such as salary caps and fines, produce game schedules, and ensures a
smooth running of the games.
Policy Issues
Atlanta Braves, like any other organization, faces different policy issues. According to
Blake (2021), one of the policy issues at Atlanta Braves is related to race and racism. The team
won the World Series but has been battling the racial discrimination issue as it regarded that the
team has abandoned the African American community in Atlanta. The Atlanta Braves is
increasingly regarded as a white team (Blake, 2021). The franchise has been affected by the
issues as some believe the nickname “The Chop” is insensitive to the native African American
people (The Athletic Staff, 2021). The MLB commissioner has defended this. However, it raises
racial disparity issues.
The team also faces drug testing aspects as some of its players are suspended. Marcell Ozuna is
suspended for failing a drug test (spotrcac, 2021). This has been a problem for most MLB teams

9
as players use drugs to enhance their performances. According to Carpenter (2021), the MLB
labor proposal may affect teams, including the Atlanta Braves. A proposal to spend a minimum
of $100 million in payroll annually is expected to hurt the franchise whose salary cap is more
than $174 million. This is an important policy that would affect the franchise. The MLB drug
policy does not seem clear as in 2019, players were not fined using cannabis but warned the
players in 2020 and 2021 that using the drug can lead to repercussions. Issues with player
signings and participation are also crucial policy issues. For example, in 2017, the MLB fined the
Atlanta Braves for violations of signing international players (Bowman, 2017). The team’s
punishment included forfeiting thirteen international prospects, losing the 2018 third-round draft,
and strict restrictions in the international market (Bowman, 2017). These are some of the policy
issues at the franchise.
Career Development
Atlanta Braves offers different career or employment opportunities. The company
advertises its opportunities through different platforms as it seeks different employees. The main
entry positions at the company are the trainees. For example, retail operation, guest services,
stadium operations, event operations, event operations, logistics, market automation, and digital
marketing (Atlanta Braves Organization, 2021). Most of the company’s job listings are for
trainees, which mean that the leading entry-level position at the organization is the trainees. The
trainees are then trained and work up the company into experienced employees. An example of
the job listing for an event operations logistics trainee is found in appendix B. The listing entails
the position overview, trainee program department overview, major responsibilities,
qualifications, and preferred qualifications (Atlanta Braves Organization, 2021). This is an
example of the job listing for the Atlanta Braves position of a trainee. The company lists these

positions on the company website, as seen in the appendix. The company website currently has
over fifty job listings, and most of them are for trainee positions through the trainee program
department. After training, these employees are inducted into different departments where they
work. The trainee program ensures that the employees know about the organization’s culture.
