Data Collection and Technology
Describe how epidemiological data influences changes in health practices. Provide an
example and explain what data would be necessary to make a change in practice.
Epidemiology is an important branch of medicine. It is concerned with “describing health
status, identifying risk factors, and analyzing relationships between health and different
hazardous agents” (Gulis & Fujino, 2015). Through epidemiology, healthcare practitioners and
other stakeholders get data that allows them to make crucial healthcare decisions. In any
healthcare setting, the ability to provide effective healthcare depends on the availability of data.
One of the most important ways through which epidemiological data may influence changes in
healthcare practices is by making sure that healthcare interventions are consistent with the
unique needs of the communities. Since epidemiological data usually concern specific
populations, it makes it very easy for medical care providers to have an in-depth understanding
of the unique conditions of the various populations (Mooney et al., 2015). For instance, when
there are cases of high blood pressure in a particular region, epidemiological data may provide
information concerning the lifestyles of the population, their living habits, and other factors that
may be contributing to the problem. In this regard, any medical care strategies that are being
adopted will be tailored to meet the unique circumstances of the population.
Another way through which epidemiological data may be used to influence changes in
health practices is the adoption of preventive measures rather than curative approaches. In recent
years, there has been a desire to resort to preventive health practices rather than waiting until
people get sick then offering treatments to them. Epidemiological data is likely to play an
important role in making sure that the health challenges in different regions are recognized and
appropriate interventions adopted to address the challenges. When epidemiological data suggest
that there is a region where cases of hypertension are on the rise as a result of weight issues, it is
possible to develop suitable mechanisms to make sure that the population takes active measures
to address the cause of the illness rather than the illness.
Discuss ways your organization uses technology to gather patient and health care
information, and how this information and data are used to direct patient care and
outcomes.
Technology plays an important role in gathering patient and healthcare information.
Firstly, technology, such as medical health records, is being used to capture and store patient
data. In nursing homes, there is a need to have all the relevant information about patients, and
technology has been beneficial in this front. Thus, just by clicking a computer, the hospital is
able to get all the medical history of a patient. By capturing and keeping the latest patient
information, medical care organizations get into situations where they can keep track of the
health of patients and develop appropriate approaches to improve medical care services
(Kellerman & Jones, 2013). For example, when a patient is offered some medicines, but it
appears that there is no improvement in his condition, an analysis of the medical history may
provide an idea of why the medication is failing. The data collected from patients is likely to be
useful in making sure that there is an adequate source of information from which appropriate
medical decisions may be made. This will, in the long run, improve patient outcomes.
