Summary of
Event
On this date is when Stanley Milgram was born. Milgram was a social
psychologist who ushered in a new era of how obedience is viewed (Gregorio,
2019). He performed the first-ever social experiment on the obedience of
authority to show how far are people willing to go when it comes to obedience
and they are aware that other people are answerable for their actions
(Gregorio, 2019). In his infamous social experiments involving obedience,
Milgram demonstrated that people are willing to go very far just to obey
authority. One of the experiments involved kidnapping people and putting
them in a confined environment then ordering some people to punish them.
This one was so controversial at the time and even now (Gregorio, 2019). No
one saw it coming when those in charge of the experimental confinement turn
brutal on their subjects. His research demonstrated how far people are willing
to go to obey authority. The brutality led to the ending of the experiment. This
experiment resulted in the questioning of some of the experimental methods
(Gregorio, 2019).
Influence in
Psychology
1. Stanley Milgram changed how ethical issues are seen in the field of
psychology (Gregorio, 2019). His work resulted in the review of
psychological experiments involving people. One of his experiments
was so controversial at the time and even now (Gregorio, 2019). No
one saw it coming when those in charge of the experimental
confinement turned brutal on their subjects. His research demonstrated
how far people are willing to go to obey authority irrespective of
whether the orders are right or wrong (Gregorio, 2019).
2. Stanley Milgram's experiments led to the replication of his work by
other scientists who also go the same results. However, the replication
methods were more humane than that of Milgram due to changes in
how ethical issues are handled (Gregorio, 2019). People are always
willing to ignore what their consciousness is telling them to do as long
as they feel that the orders are coming from a legitimate figure of
authority (Gregorio, 2019).
3. In Milgram's small world experiment, he showed that the Americans
appeared to be linked by around three friendship links (Gregorio,
2019). According to the experiment, two individuals are somehow
connected but the connection happens through a series or continuum of
cross-linkages. Therefore, any person can be reached through these
intermediaries (Gregorio, 2019).

should be treated thus revolutionized the mental health field (Howard, 2018).
The book resulted in radical reforms as far as mental health is concerned in the
United States (Manon, 2020). Born at the time when psychosis was know
clearly understood, Beer suffering from the same was a heavy burden. He
narrates how he was mistreated in the name of finding a cure. He was walked
from one hospital to another with no end in sight. However, he got well and
that is why he decided to document his recovery journey (Howard, 2018). The
book opened the eyes of other mental health experts as they go to terms with
how mental health should be treated. During this time, mental health sickness
was associated with a lot of misconceptions. Why using personal experience,
Beer was able to establish ethos in his work. His book quickly gained a
reputation of being the best and credible for reference (Howard, 2018).
Influence in
Psychology
1. Clifford W. Beers’s autobiography defined how mental health
conditions would later be treated (Howard, 2018). The autobiography
resulted in less brutality in the treatment of mental ailments like
psychosis (Manon, 2020). It documented how mental health challenges
should be treated thus revolutionized the mental health field. Therefore,
the book is key in reducing unnecessary brutality in the treatment
methods (Howard, 2018).
2. The book resulted in radical reforms as far as mental health is
concerned in the United States (Howard, 2018). The changes resulted
from the desire to carry out more studies surrounding mental health
issues. From the research, doctors came up with better methods of
dealing with mental health issues. Born at a time when psychosis was
not known clearly understood, Beer went through the challenges of
treatments available at a personal level (Howard, 2018).
3. Beer's autobiography became the major textbook in any mental health
school. The trainers and instructors used the example from the book to
explain their points (Manon, 2020). Also, they took part in bringing in
the reforms (Howard, 2018). Many books have been written with
references drawn from Beer’s autobiography. Therefore, the
autobiography changes the literature side of mental health issues
(Howard, 2018).

This is the date when José Szapocznik was born (Szapocznik, et. al., 2007).
This researcher became notable for researching and practicing mental health
issues specifically dedicated to Hispanic people. At the top of his work was the
use of family therapy methods and techniques in addressing mental health
challenges. Besides, he studied problems of substance and drug abuse
(Szapocznik, et. al., 2007). In 1991, the American Psychological Association
awarded him for his illustrious professional helps in the field. Thanks to
Szapocznik, scholars found it evident that family therapy can play a very big
role in the treatment of mental challenges. Szapocznik demonstrated that there

is a need to incorporate family therapy when giving psychosocial support. In
such a situation, the person in need of help gains from the experts more
quickly unlike when the person is left to be handled alone. Besides,
Szapocznik’s work showed the effects of drug abuse on people. He proposed
different methods of helping the drug abuser instead of finger-pointing
(Szapocznik, et. al., 2007).
Influence in
Psychology
1. This researcher became notable for researching and practicing mental
health issues specifically dedicated to Hispanic people. Unlike his
colleagues who focused on other mixed groups, José Szapocznik chose
a different path. To focus on Hispanic population (Szapocznik, et. al.,
2007). Therefore, it became less small involving as far as carrying out
research is concerned. The reason is that smaller sample size is less
costly and more efficient.
2. Through his work, José Szapocznik ensured he starts the first-ever
national effort aimed at preventing and treating adolescent substance
and drug abuse. The effort also went on rehabilitation efforts. José
Szapocznik focused on the Hispanic youth population (Szapocznik, et.
al., 2007). Besides, José Szapocznik developed and tested a family-
based mental health therapy. His method quickly gathered fame for
having a higher efficiency level.
3. José Szapoczni wrote different books as well as scientific publications
that contributed immensely to the world of psychology. The focus of
his books was on Hispanic youths (Szapocznik, et. al., 2007). He is
famed for developing a one-Person Family Therapy. Besides, he came
up with a brief structural therapy for drug-affected people.
