Exegesis of Mark 10:32-45
Introduction
The righteousness of Jesus Christ and the path to the Kingdom of God, as seen through
true discipleship, is depicted in the narrative presented in Mark 10:32-45. For one to be
considered significant and up to the task in enumerating the requirements that Jesus wants from
his followers and disciples, the pathway provided in this scripture is essential to find. Mark
10:43-44 states the following as part of his message in his gospel, Not so with you instead,
whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first
must be slave of all. This means that the roles and expectations of the disciples changed
significantly as they found ways to greatness and righteousness (Maloney, 2017 pp. 73). The aim
of Mark, as the author focused on making readers understand and acknowledge the relationship
between Jesus and God. Smith (2002 pp. 61) refers to Jesus as an actor of God, whereby, the
actions of Jesus should be viewed as actions initiated by God. In this sense, Jesus is considered
as one who came in the world to suffer and save humanity in the form of a human sent by God.

a. Summary of Historical Facts of Mark and his Gospel
Mark forms one of the four main gospels that are perhaps the pillars of the New
Testament. As such, the narratives about the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Christ are told
in different perspectives within the four Gospels. Mark, the author of the gospel of Mark while
in companion with Peter Simon, described the ministry of Jesus throughout his life, teaching
people the requirements of an individual who wanted to demonstrate true discipleship. The
historical background of the Gospel of Mark is that Mark developed it as he was Peter’s
interpreter and could record all detail accurately. Wenham & Walton (2011 pp. 124) indicate that
“‘Mark became Peter’s interpreter and wrote accurately all that he remembered Matthew
collected the oracles in the Hebrew language, and each interpreted as best he could. This is a
clear indication that the Gospel of Mark is a story told about what he recorded throughout the
mission of Peter. The authorship of Mark is probably dated in AD 66-70, which includes a
collection of passion narratives, parable, and miracle stories that Jesus attended to.
Historically, the relationship that Peter and Mark had qualifies Mark to write about what
Peter was talking about. 1 Peter 5:13, says that She who is in Babylon, chosen together with
you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark. This indicates the strong relationship
between the two apostles to the effect of referring him to his son. Further to note, Wenham &
Walton (2011 pp. 168) point out that the Gospel of Mark historically reports several prolonged
debates between various groups of people and Jesus, Mark 11:2712:40. In turn, Jesus is
considered as an offender of all the religious protocols and is planned to be killed by Sadducees,
Herodias, Pharisees, elders, scribes, and chief priests.
