STRUCTURE OF DNA
The word DNA is an acronym for DEOXYRIBONUCLEIC ACID, which is an acidic
molecule made up of nucleotides and it contains the sugar deoxyribose. It was firstly identified
by Swiss physiological chemist Friedrich Miescher in 1869 inside the nuclei of human white
blood cells .He called it as nucleic acid because it was acidic in nature. Later on, many scientists
worked on it including;
Phoebus Levene ,(firstly discovered the order of three major component of single
nucleotides and carbohydrate component of RNA)
Rosalind Franklin ,(preformed x-ray diffraction to analyze the structure of DNA)
Erwin Chargaff, (expended the levene’s work by adding additional information
structures of DNA)
Watson and Crick,(formulated and constructed DNA scale model)

DNA is a molecule made up of two polynucleotide chains that coiled around each
other to form a double helix carrying genetic instructions for the development, functioning,
growth and reproduction of all known organisms and many viruses. The two strands of DNA
are known as polynucleotide as they are composed of simpler monomeric units called
