Borges and Averroes
How do the children playing "mosque" helps Averroes understand the words "tragedy"
and "comedy" and does Averroes translation of these words seems accurate?
The children playing Mosque at the balcony where Averroes was looking from, helped
him to translate tragedy and comedy in that they were pretending to call Muslims to prayers by
imitating adhan. One of the children, pretended to be the mosque tower, the other one pretended
to be the keeper of the mosque who calls on the believers to come and play and the last one
pretended to be the prayer (Pensom, 399). The act by the children was dramatic and tragic in that
it did not last long since all the children wanted to be at the mosque tower. So, yes his translation
was accurate.
How the theme of metaphysics does is present in the story?
The theme of Metaphysics presents in the story where all the children wanted to be the
mosque tower. Which is what the Islam believers face while praying. Additionally, in their
chanting, they said” there is no God but Allah”
When Borges states that Averroes has failed or is a failure, what does he mean?

When Borges says Averroes is a failure because even after watching the children play
“mosque” at first he did not get to see the meaning of the words he was looking for (400). It was
ironic that at the start of his play he had said that “what you are seeking is usually very close to
us.” But he failed to see what he was looking for even after the children presented it right in front
of him.
