ABSTRACT
The project entailed the subtopic on the internal structure of the earth,
which is in form one on the topic of the earth and the solar system. This
project was a model of the internal structure of the earth .It was
designed to help the learner draw and name the internal structure of
the earth, stating the characteristic of each layer. The project was
designed by use of manila papers, soft board, pins and a mark pen to
name. The topic was in form one and learners need to be familiar with
the concept and visualize the idea to have a clear picture in their minds.

Geography is one of the three humanities studied in Kenya. It is a
humanity as well as a science, thus it requires a number of teaching
aids as well as various instructional media to help learners visualize and
understand difficult and challenging concept. However due to lack of
resources and poor teaching methodologies in many schools the
performance of geography was poor. The concept of the structure of
the earth was one of the areas that required use of instructional media
and actual involvement of learners in teaching and learning. The
learners needed to visualize the concept and bring the real pictures into
their mind by something they can see and not in a theoretical form. The
project intended to come up with most effective and efficient model of
the internal structure of the earth which provided concrete
representation of the different layers. The project also enhanced
learner participation in learning.

highway. The school started in 2011 with a population of less than 200
students. Currently the school has grown into a big school with two
streams per class. Despite the growth of the school the performance of
geography was found to be laterally below the average which made
many incoming students to have a negative attitude towards
geography.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT.

By the end of the project the learner was able to.
.Draw a clear internal structure of the earth
.Name the layers of the internal structure of the earth
.State the characteristics of each and every layer of the internal
structure of the earth.
JUSTIFICATION OF THE PROJECT.
In reference to geography performance in Ntharene day sec school and
consultation with the subject teachers as well as the learners the
project was found to be very useful and reliable to the learners and the
school because ..
1. There were inadequate resources in the school to help the learner
visualize the concept.
2. Most of the materials required were locally available in the school
and in the nearby market thus cost effective.

3. The model was light, easily portable and large thus it was used by
many students in learning.
4. The model stimulated learners interest and enhanced active
participation in learning hence learning was interesting especially in
geography.
PROJECT DESIGN/ DESCRIPTION
The resource entailed a piece of board mounted on a stand, a piece of
sack, manila papers, pins and a mark pen. The sack was mounted on the
soft board using the pins. Round manila papers of different shapes
were mounted on the board. The process was carried out by the
students. The mark pen was used to name the layers on the sack.

PROCEDURE
. The soft board was mounted on the stand.
. The sack was pinned on the soft board.
. The manila papers were cut off into round objects of different sizes
around six of them.
. The manila papers were stack using pins starting with largest up to the
smallest.
. The mark pen was used to name the layers on the board.

UTILIZATION OF THE PROJECT
The resource was used in teaching and learning by placing it at the front
of the classroom and as the teacher taught the learner was able
visualize the concept and get a concrete idea on the internal structure
of the earth. The resource was used by all the teachers in the
department to aid in teaching geography.
PROJECT EVALUATION
Showing Page:
12/17
Model developed was sizeable enough to enhance visibility by the
learner. The project was effective with learners being able to use it
appropriately. After utilization the learner was able to visualize the
concept and put them in mind. This is because most of the learners
were able to draw the diagram in their books.
LIMITATIONS
Unavailability of time to construct as teaching was in progress. There
was also unavailability of materials to use.
RECCOMENDATIONS
I do recommend that all the geography teachers in the school to adopt
to the resource and use it efficiently in the class. Geography should be
taken as a practical subject.
