MUHAMMAD EXILE FROM MECCA 2
Ibn Sad, one of Muhammad’s companions explained that the opposition against
Muhammad in Mecca begun when Muhammad gave a verse that warned against the worship
of many gods, polytheism, and idols. This is one of the reasons for his ouster in Mecca based
on Ibn Sad’s explanation.
The other reason is provided in the Quran. According to the Quran, Muhammad’s
opposition in Mecca started during his public teaching. During this period, Islam was quickly
spreading and was thus perceived as a threat to the Meccan rulers of the time particularly
because they generated wealth through the Kaaba as well as the local tribes. In particular,
Muhammad’s tribe the Quraysh tribe deemed the content of his message offensive since they
shielded the Kaaba and obtained their religious and political power from the polytheistic
shrines they worshipped in (Cole, 2018). This was the second reason why Muhammad faced
threats and ouster from Mecca.
The other reason is that the ruling Mecca tribes saw Muhammad as a threat and
danger that might potentially result in political rivalry and tensions similar to those, which
were experienced in Bedouin and Judaism polytheistic worship. In numerous instances, the
merchants of Mecca tried to convince Muhammad to abandon his teaching and preaching
through providing him admission to their inner circles as well as an advantage to marriage.
However, Muhammad turned down their offers.
While the opposition to Muhammad initially seemed like sarcasm and ridicule, it later
changed to one persecution forcing individuals who had recently been converted to Islam to
migrate to other areas such as Abyssinia, which is the current day Ethiopia (Cole, 2018). The
Quraysh proposed a new form of worship, which was different from Muhammad’s teaching
of the Quran in an attempt to control his widespread and increasing fame.
