A business that seeks to have productive and efficient employees needs to
implement coaching and mentorship programmes (Long, 2016). Coaching and
mentoring employees has an array of benefits that can only increase the chances of
the business becoming successful (Long, 2016). The following essay will be
discussing the various benefits that coaching and mentoring has on a business.
It is important for juniors or trainees to be appointed mentors when they first enter
the business (Long, 2016). Mentoring is defined by Nickels, McHugh and McHugh
(2012), as the process where an experienced employee supervises, coaches and
guides juniors or trainees. Mentorships help the employees feel less isolated and it
helps them settle into the organisation and its culture (Tingum, 2016). This will
benefit the business, as a worker that is not stressed and anxious will be more
productive and efficient (Tingum, 2016). An employee that has a mentor is bound to
make a fewer mistakes in their job, as they will have advice from a more experienced
employee (Tingum, 2016). This will reduce any unnecessary costs to the business
that could come from mistakes made by new employees (Tingum, 2016). For
example, a secretary can receive guide lines from an experienced employee on how
to organise files in an efficient way.
Mentoring is also a staff engagement technique. Staff engagement improves the
commitment and passion that the employees have for the business; this means they
will work hard to achieve the organisations goals (Amos, et al., 2016). Mentoring also
improves the personal development of the employee being mentored (Tingum,
2016). An employee that feels like they are growing in the business will have an
increased level of job satisfaction (Tingum, 2016). An employee that is satisfied with
their job will be more productive, as they tend to be less frustrated.
Businesses can also use mentorship programmes to attract new employees
(Tingum, 2016). The business will increase their chances of attracting highly skilled
employees (Tingum, 2016). This will be beneficial to the growth of the business.
Mentoring also helps the mentor to transfer tacit knowledge, ensuring that mentees
also become mentors in the long run (Tingum, 2016). This is beneficial to the
business as they would not need to hire or appoint mentors from outside the

business (Tingum, 2016). Mentorship programmes ensure that the employee is a
long term asset to the business.
According to Amos, et al (2016) coaching is an interactive process that mangers,
supervisors or business owners use to teach or enhance the skills of junior
employees. Coaching is used to improve the employee’s capabilities and proficiency
(Long, 2016). Coaching helps grow relationships with the management; this ensures
that employees are comfortable with discussing the problems that they face with
managers or supervisors (Chakravarthy, 2011). Clear communication lines improve
staff retention as they will be able to discuss how the management can help them
improve their current working conditions (Amos, et al., 2016). For example, an
employee that feels that they have been overlooked for promotions will be able to
voice they opinion without being uncomfortable. Staff retention is beneficial to the
organisation as they will not have to spend money and time on recruiting new
employees (Amos, et al., 2016).
Another benefit of coaching is that it builds team efficiency (Callegarin, 2010). Most
coaching is done in groups and improves the employee’s abilities to work in teams
(Callegarin, 2010). Teamwork is beneficial to the business because employees can
brainstorm innovative ideas that will be beneficial to the business (Goodman, 2015).
Coaching also shows the commitment that the organisation has to the growth of the
employees (Callegarin, 2010). This improves the employee’s morale and motives
them to grow and work harder (Callegarin, 2010).
Coaching also establishes leaders within the organisation (Callegarin, 2010).
Coaching activities improve employee confidence and build leadership skills
(Callegarin, 2010). For example a manger that becomes a coach will improve their
leadership skills when coaching employees. It is important for a business to have
strong leaders that will be able to make confident decisions that will benefit the
business (Callegarin, 2010). Having employees that have strong leaderships skills
also gives the business a competitive edge as employees will be able to handle
different tasks without requiring excessive help (Callegarin, 2010). This will increase
the business’ efficiency and it also saves time and business resources (Callegarin,
2010).

In conclusion coaching and mentoring are vital for the success of a business (Long,
2016). A business that implements coaching and mentoring programmes is most
likely to succeed and to engage and retain its staff (Amos, et al., 2016). It will be
very beneficial in both the long and short run for a business to invest in coaching and
mentoring programmes.
