Foodways Part 2: Commodity Chain Analysis
Option 1) Building off the previous assignment, choose the food or foodword you
analyzed in the previous assignment and perform a food chain analysis of it.
Option 2) Choose an entirely new food/commodity and perform a food chain
analysis of it.
Whichever option you choose your analysis should contain the following
elements/dimensions. You may organize your paper along the lines of this analysis
following it from Agricultural issues to Ethical and historical ones, but write up your
analysis in a paragraph structure as you would any other essay. Use MLA annotation
to cite your sources.
1) Agriculture
a. Where are the principle ingredients grown or raised? (focus on only a
few key ones)
b. Describe and explain the means by which these ingredients are grown
with attention to agricultural technology (machines, chemicals,
irrigation, genetics) and labor (farmers, migrants, etc.) Environmental
issues associated with this food.
c. Who grows it? What percentage of retail returns to the farmer?
2) Processing
a. Detail the transformation and processing that goes into making this
product and who does this?
3) Marketing and Distribution
a. How is the product marketed and distributed?
b. Who sells its?
c. What health claims are made about it
d. How is it advertised? What stereotypes cultural associations are made
in this advertising?
4) Consumption
a. Who uses this product and why? Who doesn’t and why?
b. What roles does this food play in families, communities, nations,
regions etc.?
5) Ethics and History
a. What ethical issues are associated with this product?
b. How was this product made and consumed in the past?
c. Is the modern production of this product sustainable?
