The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) is the leading
organization and authority in healthcare data management. It was founded in 1928 as a non-
profit organization known as Association of Record Librarians of North America (Our history.
AHIMA). The organization's members had grown their engagement in community health
centers, hospitals and other medical facilities when its name was changed again in 1970. The
American Medical Record Association began to play an increasingly important role in the
administration of government programs such as Medicare. The present name, AHIMA, was
given to the organization in 1991, and it is appropriate for the development of knowledge beyond
a single medical record and what may happen if health information were to be compromised.
By “Empowering people to impact health” the AHIMA Mission clearly states the roles
performed by Health Information Management (HIM) in ensuring the wellbeing of patients
(About us: AHIMA). They ensure the patient's healthcare experience goes smoothly through
doctor's appointments to the insurance claim. In so doing, they take part in restoring health.
The AHIMA Code of Ethics sets values and principles that guide behavior, and HIM
professionals must demonstrate basic ethical ideals, concepts, and standards via their actions
(AHIMA Code of ethics). The code applies to all professional roles, regardless of their positions,
the conditions in which they work, or the people they serve. These objectives assist the efforts of
HIM professionals to improve overall healthcare quality. This is assured by establishing certain
care standards.
Taking a look at the history, mission, and code of Ethics of AHIMA, the changes, and
evolution of standards of operation have enabled professionals in HIM to design health policies,
build information systems, and assess current and anticipated information wants. In addition,

they use informatics to obtain, store, analyze, and transfer data to comply with administrative,
ethical, legal, and professional record-keeping obligations in healthcare delivery.
