E-cigarettes need to be banned
Over the years, there has been a lot of controversy surrounding smoking. The health
effects on smokers and non-smokers always being a subject of debate in heated discussions.
Varied opinions on the matter have been raised with people divided on the subject of banning
smoking entirely. With e-cigarettes recently being introduced into the market, matters have not
changed. They have also not been made simpler. Opinions have already been divided. Some
people are already vouching for the banning of e-cigarettes while others are in support of the
technological strides introduced in smoking. Delving into the matter and looking at facts from
both sides, it is easy to take note of more negatives that come with e-cigarettes. One can easily
point out how unsafe they are and the adverse effects they pose on health, their highly addictive
nature and the attractiveness to miners than traditional cigarettes hence the need to be banned.
Most of us are familiar with the health concerns surrounding cigarettes. Even cigarette
companies caution users of the potential impacts of smoking. E-cigarettes are not any different.
According to Nina Radcliff in her article ‘E-cigarettes Are Far from Harmless’ she clearly
expresses the health concerns of e-cigarettes. In as much as they are considered safer in
comparison to conventional cigarettes, they are not entirely safe to warrant their continued use.
They have the potential of causing a stroke or even a heart attack among users. Besides, they are
made of compounds that are considered to have the potential to cause cancer. Chemicals such as

formaldehyde, propylene glycol and nitrosamines are toxic and we are not sure of the harm they
cause in the body (Radcliff). Apart from nitrosamines being cancer-causing agents, the effects of
the other chemicals are still unclear. This means that we cannot trust them to allow and
encourage continued usage.
Addiction is also another issue to be wary of e-cigarettes. Most of us understand the
challenges that smokers and recovering addicts go through to quit smoking. The e-cigarettes are
not any different. They contain highly addictive nicotine (Radcliff). Encouraging their usage
would only lead to the creation of another problem among users. We would soon start campaigns
and support programs to help addicts to try and quit e-cigarettes. A matter that we have been
dealing with on regular cigarettes for a long time. This would cost us even more time, resources
and finances.
Arguments for the use of e-cigarettes are largely based on the idea that they can be used
as effective getaways for individuals that are trying to quit smoking. In the article ‘E-Cigarettes
May Benefit Smokers and Public Health’ Sally Satel uses this argument to warrant the use of e-
cigarettes. It is regarded that they have lesser amounts of nicotine compared to regular cigarettes
and the amount can be controlled. This means that users can use e-cigarettes regulating the
amount while reducing every time until they stop smoking eventually. The problem here is that
we are never sure of a timeline when one would end up stopping the habit.
Also, these new generation e-cigarettes are highly attractive to young ones. Teenagers
start smoking earlier and these would be used as entry points to conventional tobacco (Satel).
The different designs and flavours associated with these cigarettes are considered highly
attractive to teenagers. This is an immediate concern for future generations. Taking this into
