BUS 5113- Organizational Theory and Behavior - Written Assignment Unit 1
Abstract
In this assignment, I will write analysis of brief analysis of four theoretical concepts
and then pick the one I feel is the most influential from both historical and managerial
perspectives.
Taylor Scientific Management
“Scientific Management originated in the beginning of the 20th century, and Frederick
W. Taylor was the primary contributor” (Laegaard & Bendslev, 2006, p.14). In the 18 to 20th
century was the time of the industrial revolution in the United States. Before the industrial
revolution, most businesses like manufacturing factories were small operations with hand
work, but the factory size became dramatically larger with mechanical equipment, and the
factory owners needed to adjust the management style (Dawson,2015). His theory proposes
that management analyze each task, set higher production targets, and help workers to
achieve them (Greco,1999). We can say that his approach contributed to optimizing the
productivity and efficiency for the mass production by monitoring, analyzing, standardizing,
and controlling the details of process instead of relying on the customized worker’s
craftsmanship.
Fayol Administrative Theory

Henri Fayol’s Administrative Theory was published around the same time as Taylor ‘s
Scientific Management. While Scientific Management focuses on technical processes,
Administrative Theory focuses on structure of organization and function of management
instead of individual’s activities. It has two overall principles which is coordination and
specialization. Coordination explains the organization structure with the hierarchical
pyramid, and it helps to clarify the responsibility and report line. Specialization explained
distribution of activities in a working group which is divided into the department based on the
job function (Laegaard & Bendslev, 2006). He also identified the main function of
management such as planning, organizing, command, coordination, and control
(Zhao&WenJun,2013). Hence, the theory presented the basic idea of hierarchical pyramid
organization structure, and division of labor including management as a part of organization
function.
Weber Bureaucracy and Organizational Structure
Max Weber’s Bureaucracy Model perceives 3 types of authorities in the organization:
traditional authority, legal(rule-oriented) authority, and charismatic authority. The
Bureaucracy Model is mainly based on legal authority which includes the idea of normative
rules for career, administrative hierarchy, policy, goal-rational action, specialization of work
(Laegaard & Bendslev, 2006). He believes that the organization structure and decision-
making process need to follow rules and rationally reason. He also emphasizes that the

hierarchical structures are formulated depending on several factors of organization such as
size, complexity, internal and external conflicts, need for management, and class struggle.
Simon Administrative Behavior
Herbert Simon’s Administrative Behavior focuses on decision making process and
structure in the organization (Auger, 2015). He categorized into two groups, Economic
man- traditional theory and Administrative man Simon’s theory. While ‘Economic
manacts rationally with complete knowledge of the relevant aspects of the environment,
Administrative man acts based on alternative satisfaction or decency because of limited
knowledge (Pataki & Padar,2013). Simon pointed out that there is a lack of realism in
traditional theory and developed the comprehension about how the decisions are made by
the individuals within the organization.
Conclusion
All 4 theories have contributed substantially to the understanding of current
organizational theories. In my opinion, Weber’s Bureaucracy has the most influential impact
on the different theories. However, today’s organizations face different types of factors and
challenges with complexity of hierarchical structures or management authorities, especially
when the organization is larger, clear rules of authority and communication are critical.
Therefore, these theories developed to meet each industry and organization characteristics.
