HORIZONTAL WELL FRACTURING
Introduction
Fracturing horizontal wells is an innovative approach to producing oil from oil and gas reservoirs
that are termed as low-permeability oil and gas reservoirs (see Exhibit A.6). A critical analysis of
the horizontal well fracturing technique is useful to not only characterize the horizontal well
fracturing technique but also resolve some of the technical challenges associated with the
technique. In the industry, it is typical for investors and oil and gas production firms to pursue
projects following a thorough analysis of the project characteristics for each well. This is mainly
because the cost of horizontal wells requires capital investment, and a thorough analysis
contributes to the effectiveness of the project. Before pursuing a project, it is typical for
production firms to configure the well, analyze the reservoir based on the properties, and
hydraulic simulation.
Technically, each horizontal well needs to have a perpendicular orientation to the stress, so the
central horizontal injection well performs well under stress. The design also shows the wellbore
trajectory. Properties of the reservoir include temperature, lithography, and target depth, among
other considerations. For the hydraulic fracking component, some of the critical parameters
include the number of fractures, spacing, length, and height, among other considerations. For
these characteristics of horizontal well hydrofracking, this study has the following aims and
objectives.
The findings from the engineering analysis are useful for designing the optimal oil and gas
production wells. However, the financial analysis should also be relevant because capital
investment is required. Typically, lower oil and gas prices deter new investments, while high oil
and gas provide economic incentives to produce more oil and gas. Thus, the decision-making
process is comprehensive with engineering and financial analyses.
