Introduction
The role of leadership in advancing the organizational goals and efficiency has gained
increased momentum in recent years. Indeed, almost every other job application is grounded on
key leadership competencies. It is, therefore, important that every ambitious student harnesses
their leadership skills at an early age in line with organizational requirements. Besides,
leadership traits help in personal development and thereby improving the opportunities for
personal growth and career development. As a future leader in the academic fields, possession of
key attributes in leadership is a vital growth for me. Ideally, the effectiveness of leadership
emerges from the balanced application of both natural traits and acquired skills (Blacks, 2015).
The complexity of the academic sector as a service industry further puts a lot of emphasis on the
acquisition of these skills in readiness for leadership. This paper defines the general aspect of
leadership and especially in higher institutions of learning, and then takes a self-assessment of
leadership capabilities. Further, the paper will outline a personal vision statement that is backed
by leadership goals and the process of achieving these goals.
Leadership is the process of providing guidance and direction to a group of people within
an organization. In particular, leadership is shrouded with the responsibilities of motivating a
group of people with the ultimate goal of achieving organizational objectives. In the recent past,
the concept of academic leadership has gained increased significance in the pursuit of excellence
in institutions of higher learning. According to Drew (2010), the challenges facing public
universities, such as decreased funding, have necessitated the institution of leaders in these
