CHAPTER I
Introduction
Education is one of the necessities of human being. Through education,
people are being able to write, read, solve, and learn different terms that can be
applied in everyday lives. Teachers, Engineers, Architects, Lawyers, and other
professionals have experienced and undergone education.
The COVID-19 pandemic had a huge effect on human lives as it resulted in
a severe loss in the world’s economy, health, opportunities, and even education.
Many people lost their job and students cannot go to school sue to this virus. As
it goes, the government keeps on studying on what measures to do in order to
stop the spread of the virus. In terms of education, for students to continue
studying while at home since face-to-face classes is still prohibited, the DepED
implemented online and modular learning.

Modular learning is one of the most widespread and recognized teaching
learning techniques in different countries including Philippines. This kind of
learning from which every student will be given textbooks to aid the learning
process. Modular approach in learning has been proven to be effective and
efficient tool to help students learn by themselves. Research by Sadiq S. and Dr.
Zamir S. supports that modular teaching is more effective in teaching learning
process as compared to ordinary teaching methods. Because in this modular
approach the students learn at their own pace. But not all students agree with
this because some of them cannot understand the lesson without their teachers.
Most subjects can be targeted with this approach. The production of
instructional materials is time consuming. But the modular effectiveness can be
evaluated in this study.
The researcher conducted this study to determine the effectiveness of
modular learning in San Fernando National High School in this time of
pandemic and modern technologies.
Statement of the Problem
This study aims to identify the effectiveness of Modular learning to the
Grade 12-STEM students of San Fernando National High School in the school
year 2020-2021 to have knowledge and to stabilize the education of every

student through modular learning.
Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:
1. What is the academic performance of grade 12-STEM students of San
Fernando National High School during face-to-face classes in school year
2019-2020?
2. What is the academic performance of grade 12-STEM students of San
Fernando National High School during modular learning in school year
2020-2021?
3. Is there a significant difference between the academic performance of grade
12-STEM students during face-to-face learning and modular learning?
Significance of the Study
The study will benefit the following:
Students. The study will provide the students the knowledge about
effectiveness of modular learning. The suggestions and recommendations at
the end of the study will help them improve the performance for modular
learning.
Teachers. The study will guide teachers to better teaching regardless of not
having a face-to-face classes and not be able to teach students personally.
Parents. The study will help parents be aware of the educational system and

how it affects their children. This will help them widen their understanding and
adjusting to new teaching learning approach so they can guide their children in
the process.
Readers. The study will help readers understand the modular learning, its
difference to other teaching learning systems and how effective it is to the
students.
Future Researchers. The findings and conclusion of the study can be served
as guide and reference material for future researchers that will be conducting a
study related to effectiveness and of modular learning.
Scope and Delimitation
The study focuses on the effectiveness of modular learning to the grade
12-STEM students of San Fernando National High School. The objectives of
the study was limited to determining whether modular learning is more effective
than traditional method, determining the role of modular learning in the
academic achievements of grade 12-STEM students, and recommending for
the improvements of modular learning.
The methodology was limited to Descriptive method and survey
questionnaire as the tool for data collection. The respondents were limited to 21
grade 12-STEM students in San Fernando National High School through
simple random sampling. The period of the study was also limited to school

year 2020-2021.
Hypotheses
This study is guided by the following hypotheses:
1. H1: There is a significant difference between the academic performance of
grade 12-STEM students during face-to-face classes and modular learning.
2. H0: There is no significant difference between face-to-face classes and
modular learning.
Definition of Terms
Academic Performance. Academic performance is the achievement of
students in academic such as grades, honors, etc.
Approach. Modular approach is a method using modules or textbooks for
students.
Tool. Tools are the modules or textbooks that students will be using to study.
Virus. Corona virus is a deadly virus existed in year 2019 from Wuhan, China
that is still existing and spreading until these days.
