HAZARDOUS MATERIALS AND HEALTH AND SAFETY 2
Hazardous Materials and Health and Safety
Introduction
Hazardous Materials and Health and Safety focuses on the critical issues of public health
which are highly enshrined in the environmental health and safety standards of the United States.
Acts of Parliament and Executive Orders have largely been used to establish these standards and
the consequent agencies of enforcement such OSHA and EPA. As a result, public health in the
United States has largely been achieved due to the great collaboration between the government
and its agencies and as well as the members of the public who are the major stakeholders. The
discussion provides the general overview of Hazardous Materials and Health and Safety in the
United States.
Question 1: Research and discuss the origin of the Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA), its mission and agency vision. Differentiate the enforcement and
compliance assistance elements of the Agency.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was established by the Congress
under Occupational Safety and Health Act which was signed into law on December 29, 1970 by
the then president Richard M. Nixon (Osha.gov, 2020). The mission of the agency is centered on
assuring safety and healthful working environment for men and women workers by setting and
enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education, as well as assistance. Its
vision is geared towards the wider coverage of workers both in the private and public sectors
across the United States. However, its current coverage is largely in the private sector and partly
the public sector under federal authority jurisdictions.
