Nursing Informatics: Research and Essay 2
Introduction
This article “Human Flourishing and the Vulnerable Nurse” published under Louisiana
State University Health Sciences Center examines the traditional traits in nursing. Jane Sumner
presents the difficulties hindering nurses to flourish under the current era of Technical
Rationality and fast paced evidence based practice. She argues “The moral construct of caring in
nursing as a communication action” gives the notion on which to explore human bourgeoning
and the susceptible nurse. Technical rationality and evidence-based run-through do not consent
for the humanness of those who are obligatory to provide evidence-based care.
Literature review
Theory based practice
Jane accounts theory-based nursing practice offers nurses with a perception with which to
assess patient conditions, an approach to shape the hundreds of facts bits faced in the day-to-day
upkeep of patients, and a method to evaluate and construe the data. Kagan et al., 2009; Porter,
2010) insisted on the benefits of theory-based nursing model, since logically this bargains an
indulgent of the patients who needs assistance from the nurse. However she does account for
hindrances to the improvement, dissemination, and integration of medical indication.
The Moral Construct of Caring in Nursing as Communicative Action
Basing arguments on Habermas’s theory (2000, 2001, 2008, 2012), Jane puts communication as
the individual self of nurse and patient are not divergent, as equally they are partakers in
interaction or interpersonal dialogue, which leaves wide-open, and in essential to civility
(Habermas, 1995). This however helps the nurses feel appreciated and involved in the practice
and as an important part of self-growth and appreciate his or her contribution on the healing
process of the patient.
Conclusion
Through her article, Jane tries to raise issues for the nurses for the need of growth and happy
living. The field of nursing is seen critical and one that should not indulge any mistake. However
nurses need to live without judgment and the need for perfection not highly criticized. The
inborn humanoid susceptibility which Habermas (1995) states necessitates civility, is what is
moral. Humans only mature via interaction and this exposes the central self which hints to
vulnerability.
