MANAGING ADHD IN CHILDREN 2
Managing ADHD in Children
Raising a kid who has ADHD is not like everyday parenting. Regular household routines
and rule-making can become unmanageable, depending on the severity and type of a child’s
symptoms. It is, therefore, necessary to adopt different approaches to help cope with some of the
behaviors that result from a child suffering ADHD. Parents need to recognize the fact that kids
who have ADHD have different ways of perceiving things compared to other normal children.
While children suffering ADHD can still learn and understand what is reasonable and what is
not, their disorder makes them more prone to unwary behavior. This means that bringing up a
child with ADHD requires adjusted parent’s behavior and learning how to manage the behavior
of the child.
Medication can be the first step as a proven way to help in the child’s treatment, but
proven behavioral techniques must be employed to manage the child’s ADHD symptoms. By
following a few crucial guidelines, a parent or guardian can limit destructive behaviors and help
a child with ADHD overcome self-doubt.
Behavior management therapy
Healthcare experts usually recommend that parents or guardians of children below 12
years of age go for behavior therapy training since it is an effective way to treat ADHD in
children with the disorder. Behavior management therapy has two fundamental principles that
are encouraging and rewarding moral behavior and denying rewards for bad behavior. By
establishing rules and apparent outcomes for disobeying or following the set rules, a child with
ADHD learns to recognize that actions have consequences. A child has to follow these principles
in every area of their life, whether at home, in the social arena, or at school.
