Attraction and Beauty Bias
The assigned articles delve into the concept of attraction bias and how it relates to
discrimination and development of stereotypes. I agree with the assertions made by DiSalvo in
one of the articles. According to a research conducted testing whether attractive people earn
higher salaries, it was determined that being unattractive could also lead to higher salaries
(DiSalvo, 2017). I think this is true since some employers try to apply affirmative action and this
leads to high salaries for the less attractive people in the workplace. However, a lot of research
still needs to be done in the field.
In the other reading, Maccarone (2003) stated that the assertion is often wrong. The
assertion is based on the fact that some good-looking women find it difficult to land jobs
compared to their counterparts. I think this is true. In job positions or careers where appearance
is considered to be irrelevant, individuals who have good looks may be discriminated against and
this may lead to bias against them. As a result, the notion that attraction bias works in the reals
world is an assertion that is open to debate from various parties that may want to contribute on its
impacts on hiring in the modern workplace.
In the last reading, Sieczkowski (2014) assesses the differing opinions through an
experiment where a woman wore a fat suit when meeting some of her Tinder dates. The
experiment is an indication that attraction or beauty bias is very much in force in the modern
society. People tend to be sexist and discriminative against fat people during dates. The
experiment was a great indication of how attraction bias leads to discrimination against other
people in society.
