and psychosis: Findings from a highly traumatized, minority sample. Child Abuse & Neglect, 58,

Provide a brief description of the traumatic events, including a summary of how
they affected the individuals involved.
Viana et al (2017) investigated ‘rumination and PSTD among trauma-exposed Latinos in
Primary care’ and whether mindful attention assisted in managing the condition. It is noteworthy
that Latinos are classified among the vulnerable populations in the United States hence most of
them go through a lot as regards to traumatic events like illnesses and limited access to care,
discrimination and other natural disasters. Powers et al (2016), on the other hand, looks at the
association that child abuse exposure has with PTSD symptoms, and current psychotic disorders.
The study establishes that child abuse and PSTD are statistically significant predictors of current
psychotic disorders.
Describe the interventions discussed in the articles and explain how they addressed
the psychosocial issues and needs of the individuals affected by the trauma.
For Viena et al., (2017), the intervention discussed is mindful attention or strategies that
encourage mindfulness. Rumination is defined in the article as “a maladaptive cognitive coping
strategy characterized by repetitive and focused attention on the causes and consequences of
one's negative feelings” (Viena et al., 2017; p. 244). Mindful attention entails the conscious and
nonjudgmental appraisal of what is occurring in the present moment, both internally and
externally” (Viena et al., 2017; p. 245). Mindfulness leads to a disengagement from ruminative
thoughts that mead to the development of PSTD. It achieves this by significantly reducing the
frequency and intensity of psychopathology symptoms. Powers et al (2016) propose avoidance
of similar stressful situations in the future and numbing. This can also be achieved through
relevant moral support which can be through counselling.
Explain the effectiveness of the interventions, as stated in the articles.
According to Viena et al (2017) rumination is a strategy that can be used to identify
individuals that are at a higher risk of developing PSTD. As such, mindfulness based techniques
ought to be employed with an aim of disengaging from the ruminative thoughts. For this reason,
this intervention is considered effective in controlling the development of PSTD among Latinos.
