Brown Girl Dreaming By Jacqueline Woodson
The book I selected is titled Brown Girl Dreaming, which is an autobiographical
narrative of the writer’s childhood authored in verse. The book is authored By Jacqueline
Woodson who was born in 1963 within Columbus, Ohio. Just a year following her birth, her
parents got separated, and she and her siblings shifted to their maternal home within Greenville,
South Carolina. Jacqueline and her siblings are forced to remain with their grandparents for long
durations as the mother explores New York, and they are compelled to become members of
Jehovah Witness just like their grandmother. Ultimately, Jacqueline’s mother gets a place in
New York where they can live, and they all migrate to New York. At New York, Jacqueline and
her siblings feel out of place beyond being forced to get used to having another sibling named
Roman. With time, Jacqueline becomes used to New York and eventually enjoys going to
school. By the conclusion of the novel, Jacqueline embraces the complexity of the world and
comes to view herself as an activist and author. I selected the book because I needed to
understand more about the life of the author. I needed to understand more about her life as child

siblings and family in general. I think it is one of the best au autobiographical narratives I have
read so far. Moreover, I think it is a book that I can categorically state that it is written in verses

reaches her target audience openly.
