The Reliance on Social Media
A media is considered social media through its interactivity and other features such as
user-generated content and increased connectedness. In the current world, the use of social media
can be viewed as a necessary day-to-day activity. People mostly use social media for social
interaction, decision making, and access to information. Among all social media, perhaps the
most influential are social networking sites. Facebook is the most popular social networking site.
Facebook has experienced increased popularity and increased active usage since its development
in 2004 (The Guardian, Para 2-3). This has encouraged increased use and reliance on Facebook.
In this article, I argue that despite the benefits linked with Facebook, increased reliance has an
adverse impact, such as addiction, fear of missing out (FOMO), and increased cyberbullying
incidences.
Background
One thing that makes Facebook appealing to many people is the various features that it
houses. First, as long as one remains connected to the internet, Facebook offers a chance to chat
with anyone, including friends, family members, and even strangers. Facebook, earlier on,
launched the messenger application for mobile users that are specifically dedicated to chatting.
This app also offers one other option, such as calls and video chatting tool (The Guardian, Para
5). Moreover, the recent Skype partnership implementation has allowed skype users to start
video chatting using inbuilt Facebook video chat services. Other features such as pages, news-

feed, and groups make the use of Facebook diverse, thus supporting the needs of various users.
For instance, groups are managed by an admin who regulates the content posted. Fun pages are
essential for publishing posts, videos, info, and news about a given topic.
Features, such as news feeds and pages, have increased the flow of information. Through
better socializing, Facebook changes the way people feel and think as one can get information
about various sectors, religions, people, and cultures. It is also an excellent source of news and
information. Currently, Facebook is one of the best sources that remain up-to-date with trending
issues and get updates regularly. Many news sites and blogs post links on Facebook to update
their users on new content on their platforms and attract other potential users. It is a social
platform that brings the globe together. This makes it more than just a social networking site. For
instance, it is easy to link to link-minded individuals by looking at their interests and easily
connecting with them their wall updates or sending them a free message.
Drawbacks
Notification, a feature that allows one to be alerted on any updates and posts on
Facebook, fosters addiction. Currently, any event posted on Facebook will send a notification to
all those following the event. This causes people to engage in increased checking, replying, and
scrolling. This has become the norm of the day. Although many people are using Facebook non-
problematically, some have become addicted and engage in compulsive and excessive (Twenge,
Para 29). The ability to be both a user and a content-generator means that one can reply to all the
updates and posts continuously posted. Facebook addiction is the same as any other addiction,
and the effects are similar when one fails to access it. Some relatable behavioral addiction traits
include changes in mood swings, withdrawal symptoms, tolerance, and depression. Thus,
increased reliance is having an advanced impact on these users.
