TESLA’S VISION AND MISSION STATEMENTS 2
Tesla’s Vision and Mission Statements
Vision Statement
Tesla’s vision is “to create the most compelling car company of the 21
st
century by
driving the world’s transition to electric vehicles” (Hitt, Ireland & Hoskisson, 2017, p. 382).
The vision statement complies with some of the five characteristics that make an ideal vision
statement. David et al. (2019) note that at a minimum, a vision statement should disclose the
nature of the business that the company engages in. Tesla's vision statement is explicit that the
company is a manufacturer of electric cars, but it leaves out the fact that the company also
engages in the production of sustainable energy solutions. Another vital characteristic of a vision
statement is that it should state what the company wants to become. Tesla wants to become the
most compelling car company of the 21

ideally a single sentence. Tesla's mission statement is brief; a single statement with 19 words.
However, the vision statement fails to articulate the orientation of the company to customer
needs. A good vision statement should be authored from the customers’ perspective (David et al.,
2019). Another characteristic of a good vision statement is that it should be developed with the
inputs of as many managers as possible. Tesla’s vision statement compliance with this
characteristic can only be inferred.
A revised vision statement for Tesla would be: Tesla’s vision is to become the world’s
most innovative manufacturer of electric vehicles and sustainable energy systems in the 21
st
century.
The proposed vision statement for Tesla is better than the current vision statement for two
reasons. It stipulates all the kinds of businesses that the company engages in. Tesla is not only a
manufacturer of electric cars but its current business endeavors provided on the company's
