THE HOLISTIC PATIENT ASSESSMENT 2
Introduction
This paper will address the holistic health assessment of a male who is 29 years old. He is
my cousin, and for the case of this study, we will call him "David." It is not his real name. The
pseudonym is to ensure confidentiality in adherence to the guidelines in the nurse's code of
conduct. A holistic health assessment is the examination of a person as a whole. It goes beyond
the focus on physical health since it also addresses the spiritual, mental, and emotional health. The
physician takes into consideration all the conditions to ensure the well-being of the individual.
Health history
In 2015, David visited a healthcare facility in California and informed the doctor that he
was feeling pain while urinating, there were some spots of blood in the urine (hematuria), and had
some trouble while starting and stopping to urinate. Some of the tests that were performed are the
prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test and the digital rectal exam (DRE), ("National Cancer
Institute," 2017, para.1). The diagnostic tests demonstrated that David had prostate cancer. The
medical oncologist informed David that he should have 3-month chemotherapy and hormone
therapy. David is the first member of their family to have prostate cancer. After the diagnosis of
the prostate cancer on 25th February 2015, he began to have frequent urges to urinate since he lost
control of his bladder. It was in October 2015. David continued with the recommended treatments
until 2017 when his oncologist recommended for Radical Prostatectomy. It involved the removal
of the prostate gland and the tissues around it, ("Mayo Clinic," 2018, para.3). This recommendation
was based on the observation that the cancerous cells were metastasizing. The consequence of the
surgery was that David would be impotent as a result of erectile dysfunction (ED).
