CLINICAL JUDGEMENT 2
I feel that a combination of both experience and knowledge is the most significant
influence of clinical judgment. Experience and knowledge enable the nurse to understand the
patient's clinical presentation better (Tanner, 2006). In this case, knowledge regarding a specific
disease, its diagnostic characteristics, and the patient’s history is essential in arriving at an
informed clinical judgment regarding any clinical situation. Experience does save clinicians time
and resources in establishing the complicating factors of an ambiguous clinical situation. This is
because when a nurse encounters a reoccurring symptom in a complicated or under-determined
case, it will act as a pointer to alternative possibilities that the nurse has faced in previous
situations that presented the same symptom.
An accurate clinical judgment would result in an appropriate response by the clinicians
towards the patient's condition. This is essential in providing individualized care to the patient.
According to Tanner (2006), "clinical judgments are more influenced by what the nurse brings to
the situation than the objective data about the situation at hand." This means that the knowledge
and experience of the nurse are more critical in arriving at a more accurate clinical judgment than
just depending on the available data. Therefore, clinical assessment is an essential skill for a

care facility. Patient details also help nurses in determining the course of action as well as
prioritization. The routine of activities within the facility significantly influence task
prioritization and clinical judgment. This is only possible through experience within the facility
