SUBSTANCE ABUSE 2
Answer to Question 1
Substance use has been there hundreds of years ago in the whole world, with the
discovery of alcoholism by Benjamin Rush, one of the American founding fathers (American
Addiction Centers, n.d.). According to the American Addiction Centers (n.d.), he discovered
drug addiction as a disease hence leading to the establishment of the first hospital to treat
alcoholism as a mental health illness in New York State Inebriate Asylum in 1864. Other drugs,
known to cause addiction and mental illnesses, were marijuana that was smoked by Americans
(discovered in 1995), heroine that was discovered to cause similar health conditions in 1996, and
cocaine, whose discovery roots in China and India in 1492. Until today, drug abuse is known to
be the use of drugs that negatively affect one’s mental health and physical health. Excessive use
of these drugs causes death and violence, among others (Nies & McEwen, 2018). Modern ways
of treating drug addiction are broad and range from treatment by other medicine to cognitive
approaches to a combination of both.
Answer to Question 2
Substance abuse is considered a bad practice in society. Substance users are deliberated
to be immoral and unethical because they exhibit immoral behaviors and acts such as losing
touch with family (neglect), breaking family relationships due to family violence, and having a
bad relationship with other people in the community (American College of Obstetricians &
Gynecologists, 2015). Substance users are also considered to be carriers of sexually transmitted
diseases and other unhealthy related conditions. On the legal perspective, substance use is illegal
since it is related to adverse behaviors such as physical violence in the public that results in
injuries to people and a major cause of crimes associated with human acts such as suicide, and
murder. Substance abuse means a violation of legal laws that protects human rights as sexual
harassment and sexual violence.
Answer to Question 3
Poor control of behavior for those abusing drugs can lead to violence. Low level
of IQ, aggressive behavior, high level of emotional distress among drug abusers, exposure to an
environment with constant conflicts and violence like family, antisocial norms, attitudes, and
beliefs also influence violence (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d.). Drug abusers
and addicts with hyperactivity and attention disorders, low involvement by parents, broken
family relationships, substance use by parents, and poor family functioning influence violence
among drug users. Also, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (n.d.),
involvement in lousy company or peers, and low levels of commitment to the school and poor
performance are influential factors to violence related to drug abuse and substance use.
Answer to Question 4
Violence is an outcome of drug use and substance abuse in the world, a challenge that
affects the youth mostly. The adolescents are the most affected, with about 4% American
between the age of 12 and 17 suffering from this problem (Thomas, 2020). Adolescents, who are
affected by substance abuse, exhibit both physical and sexual violence. Adults over 26 years and
below the elderly age are also affected and cause violence ranging from child neglect and
mistreatment, elder abuse as well as sexual abuse (Thomas, 2020). Women are more affected by
violence caused by drug abuse than men.
