RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research Hypothesis
The researcher expects that changes in the global business environment will have a
significant impact on the competitive advantage of companies. Those companies that are able
to respond effectively to changes will have a clear competitive advantage in their industry while
those that fail to respond to these changes will be at a disadvantage. The key question to be
answered is how firms will adapt to the change of the global business environment. It is also
expected that if a firm has a strong competitive advantage in its industry, it will be able to
respond effectively to changes in industry competition and be able to sustain its profit margin.
If, however, a firm lacks a strong competitive advantage in its industry, it will not be able to
respond effectively and could lose market share with other firms. Furthermore, the study also
expected that firms with strong competitive advantage will be able to maintain their
competitive advantage. On the other hand, it is also predicted that firms without competitive
advantage are likely to lose market share. Therefore, the fundamental question of this study is
how companies will respond to changes in the global business environment and how these
changes will affect their competitive advantage.
Research Questions
This study will attempt to understand how different sectors of industry experience
changes in external factors implicated by the changes in the global business environment
within Albania and how they are able to react to these external factors by determining if those
companies that are performing better are more successful or less successful than those that do
not employ a response strategy because they failed to foresee these changes coming their way.
Hence, this study will attempt to answer the hypotheses that have been set by the researcher.
The questions set to be answered include:
1. Will firms respond effectively to changes in the global business environment?
2. If so, how effectively and how long will they sustain their competitive advantage?
3. How will the competitiveness of firms differ from those of other firms in the same
industry?
4. Why do some firms manage external factors better than others?
5. To what extent, if any, does corporate governance contribute to firm's competitiveness
or performance?
Research Design
This study will generally implement a Quantitative Positivism research design that
revolve around the core research question, “How do firms respond to changes in the global

business environment?”. This will mainly focus on specific respondent-companies belonging
to different industries in Albania.
A positivist paradigm will guide the research philosophy, which represents how
knowledge is created. Implementing a positivistic viewpoint involves quantifying the features
of the social environment by statistical analysis of quantifiable observations. As a result, the
study will take a Deductive Approach, will use a survey technique, will be cross-sectional, and
will rely on a questionnaire as the primary data collection method.
Sampling Design
This study will utilize a probability sampling technique. The firms will be randomly
selected according to their size across different industries within Albania to ascertain the
external influences that exist in the market and how companies respond to the changes as they
aim at becoming successful. According to HitHorizons (n.d.), the top known industries in
Albania include wholesale trade, services, manufacturing, construction and transportation,
communications, electric, gas, and sanitary services. Random sampling involves selecting
companies to be interviewed without a specific criterion to avoid any form of bias (Dattalo,
2009). The sampling will ensure that the companies from the main industries will be captured
to ensure that the information obtained will be reliable. After companies are identified, the
main respondents and key informants of the study will be selected using the following
attributes:
1. They are full-time employees in firms operating within Albania across all industries.
2. They are currently employed as top-level managers knowledgeable on business’
strategic plans.
3. They are actively involved in planning for business strategies to address external
matters affecting the business.
In cases where managerial employees of the respondent business firms are not available
for the conduct of interviews and surveys, the next order of priority are subordinate employees
with significant knowledge on how the firm manages external factors posed by the changes in
the global business climate. Moreover, the researcher also considers a judgmental sample
because it will be needed to access a particular population with a high level of experience to
investigate the research questions (Malhotra, Birks, & Wills, 2012). Snowball sampling would
also aid in the identification of possible respondents that share similar characteristics.
Population
Population Identity
The major subjects of the study are the companies across different sectors in
Albania . These are business firms that are affected by the dynamic in the international
business environment and are strategically making plans to address this issue.
