THEORIES AND MODELS FOR PROGRAM PLANNING 2
Health promotion programs are critical since they support health outcomes and ensure
healthy lifestyle behaviors. In most cases, program planners have a variety of models and
theories that they use to help the process in the context of working with individuals,
communities, groups and organizations. Individuals and communities in most cases, have many
risky lifestyles that undermine the quality of life they live and their healthcare outcomes in the
bottom line (Simpson, 2015). These individual lifestyles and behaviors also affect their overall
health. The behaviors may include but not limited to physical inactivity, unhealthy diets, stress,
and smoking and drinking. Other factors may undermine the ability of an individual or
community to change their behaviors effectively. Some of these factors include socioeconomic,
poor access to healthcare, ethnic/cultural differences, inaccessibility to healthy foods, and most
importantly lack of exercise (Simpson, 2015).
Evaluation of the factors highlighted above can better inform the program choices since
they direct the effort of program planning to better serve the underserved needs of both the
community and the individuals. For the program to be effective, it must address both the
behavior and the factors that surround the behavior. The models and theories, in this case,
provide an essential framework for program planners to build in the process of developing a
health promotion program (Simpson, 2015). This discussion will focus on three models or
theories related to health behavior change that can assist program planners in developing an
effective health promotion program. The three models include socio-ecological, trans-theoretical,
and health belief model. Program planners can incorporate these three models/theories to
effectively design a program that best meets the needs and expectations of the target
communities or individuals (Simpson, 2015).
