Qualitative Research Method
The two common research methods for a study include qualitative and quantitative
research methods. They perform different roles in research and apply to various studies. For
example, quantitative research methods centers on objective measurements of numerical data
that are converted into statistics (Queirós et al., 2017). The data collected by the use of surveys,
polls, and questionnaires are available for the formulation of facts used and to identify the
patterns and trends in research. However, the qualitative research method is applicable when one
wants to understand the underlying opinions and reasons, thereby provided insights about the
existing problem and possible ideas to arrive at the solutions. Therefore, the qualitative research
method focuses on obtaining relevant data for analysis through the use of focus groups and
interviews. Qualitative research is also applicable to small sample sizes and thus produces
reliable data. Therefore, the qualitative research method would be suitable for the study on the
relationship between exposures to sexually explicit lyrics to sexual behavior among adolescents.
The qualitative research method is appropriate for this study because it has several
advantages over quantitative research. For example, qualitative research offers a detailed
description of the participants of the study as well as their opinion, feelings, and experiences
concerning the topic. Like in this case, the participants are adolescents, and thus the researcher
would want to collect adequate data on their feeling towards explicit sexual lyrics and how it
affects their sexual behavior. The researcher has a high chance of getting first-hand information,
unlike in quantitative research, in which the outcomes depend on the presented facts and not
exploring in-depth thoughts about the topic. According to Rahman (2017), qualitative research
uses data collection methods such as interviews, and focus group, there providing the researcher
with the opportunity to interact with the participants. For example, a researcher may form focus

groups and engage in interactive sessions with the participants. Teenagers from a specific school
may come together in different groups to discuss the extent to which sexually explicit lyrics
affect their sexual behavior. Some may strongly agree, while others may strongly disagree,
thereby giving them equal chances of contributing to the study.
The researcher may also choose to interact with the group by sending them online
surveys, in which the teenagers can respond to various devices, thereby saves on time and
money. Therefore, the participants can influence the outcome of the study and contribute to the
possible solutions that influence their decision on the choice of music they listen to going
forward (Queirós et al., 2017). The researcher may also choose to hold direct interviews with the
participants and understand their reaction towards sexually explicit lyrics and how it affects their
sexual behavior. Therefore, this data collection method is different from the data collected by a
researcher using quantitative research since it provides in-depth information about the
participants.
The structure of qualitative research is also flexible, and the researcher can reconstruct
for effective research analysis. The participants can also determine the consistency of the study,
thereby understanding complex issues for the successful outcome of the research objectives
(Queirós et al., 2017). For instance, a researcher can understand that previous sexual activity of
some of the participants before being exposed to sexually explicit music, and other factors can
affect the study. Thus qualitative research must capture the changes. Therefore, qualitative
research contributes to the understanding of the factors that lead to sexual behaviors among
adolescents.
Qualitative and quantitative research methods may be useful in research, but it is
essential to understand the overall objective of the study and apply the most appropriate method
