Approach and Avoidance Motivation: Issues and Advances
Summary
The experimental type of study approach and avoidance motivated behavior is dominated
by lines of research that are mainly centered on modulating behavioral reflexes and also ones on
physiological response that is based on emotional stimuli. In this case, approach and avoidance
are seen as patterned reactions that are associated with emotional stimuli. According to the
journal, approach and avoidance are mainly governed by motives that are unconscious in nature
or ones that tend to direct behavior either towards or away from the required state.
Points discussed
Most people, including researchers prefer to infer motivational states of approach and
avoidance from any form of observed behavior (Eder et al., 2013). The motivational states are
later on used in explaining a propensity used to approach or at times avoid a given situation.
Despite the idea of central motivation system having a long history and also being bolstered by
various types of empirical studies its use as an explanatory concept is never a peril. Motivational
explanations and approach are always circular in situations where the motivational is inferred
entirely on the behavior it is meant to explain. The various inferences should also clearly
measure the behavior measured.
